179631 2003-10-01 12:34:00 It will be WOL or WOR in most cases
Wake On Lan, or Wake On Ring.

Thats where the PC will wake up when there is phone or LAN traffic usually.

Depends what hardware you have, can be software (BIOS setting) and/or hardware (plug into motherboard from LAN card or Modem (or both)

179632 2003-10-01 19:09:00 I agree with GF, my computer used to switch itself on every time the phone rang until I changed the setting in the bios. pompeymike (4601)
179633 2003-10-01 19:18:00 Yep, it's a bios thing and a complete pain.
Turn it off.

179634 2003-10-01 22:11:00 If it is turning on straight after telling it to turn off, then it could be a BSOD (BlueScreen Of Death). You can find out the program causing it by turning off the "Automatically restart" on system failure. Pheonix (280)

I thought BSOD only occured wen not enuf ram and too much programs were being run, and only occured wen u wanted to run more programs and it would then result in the BSOD and the automatic restart in WIN XP, but i have never come across the BSOD/restart wen u shut down the comp. ?:| I could be wrong tho :), but im pretty sure i havnt seen that............

179636 2003-10-02 04:44:00 It's unlikely to be WOL. That can start a particular computer, but it requires a special "magic packet" to do it. The magic packet contains the actual hardware MAC address if the Internet card, so it's a bit difficult to generate it "randomly".

Maybe a stuck "power switch" on the front panel.

179639 2003-10-02 08:40:00 Experience accumulates,

but you can't accumulate it until you have experienced it.

Time will fill all voids in your knowledge and gradually you will come to realise that you know very little.

When you look at it that way, what is a BSOD or two between friends, whether coming or going.
