180076 2003-10-03 01:30:00 Do both PC's have network cards?
If so an easy way would be to use a crossover network cable and set them up as a local area network with one pc set to say 192.168.0.1 and the other set to 192.168.0.2 both on the same subnet 255.255.255.0
also you need to make sure they are on the same workgroup.

Another question, what operating systems are each PC running??

180077 2003-10-03 01:32:00 They require special cables for data transfer. A couple of thoughts are :-
1/ Remove hard drive from his PC and make it a secondary drive in your PC.
2/ Network the 2 together if you have network facilities available on each computer.
I have a serial cable that has a program for swapping files, but only for windows 95/98. But 2.5 Gigs would take sooooooo looooong.

180078 2003-10-03 01:37:00 i think my pc does...

but his doesnt

both running xp home..

and moving hdd over...i dont have confidence in moving hdds or going "inside" a computer...

and i know 2.5gigs would take so long..but i got 5-6 days to do it at least...

180079 2003-10-03 01:41:00 Does his have a USB port? I have a USB to RJ45 adaptor and crossover network cable you could borrow. (I haven't as yet tried the adaptor though). Pheonix (280)
180080 2003-10-03 01:45:00 if u mean like a normal usb port where a mouse plugs into etc etc then yes both computers have them...

and whats rj45? is that the network port?

and just to be sure..how do i know my computer has a network card?....never used it b4 but when i look at "device manager" it shows 2 items under network adapters...

180081 2003-10-03 01:51:00 RJ45 is a larger version of the socket/plug (RJ12) that is on you modem (that your lead plugs into ).
It is the plug/socket that is used for most networking. For a visual, go to dicksmith (dse.resultspage.com 74f&site=&w=rj45&submit.x=9&submit.y=8)
Visual check at rear of computer should verify.

180082 2003-10-03 02:00:00 yeah i do..
got the manual and documentation library cd and yes....
it has to be a rj45 connection so its good...

180083 2003-10-03 02:01:00 can u do this while ur onlne at the same time

ie: talk online while computer is networked to other computer doing a transfer?
csinclair83 (200)
180084 2003-10-03 02:08:00 Yes. Depending on your PC specs, could just slow down a little on the browsing side. Pheonix (280)
