179900 2003-10-02 20:34:00 Does any one know how to check what the progress on this is? I'm starting to be impaiant and want it done now. ilikelinux (1418)
179901 2003-10-02 23:52:00 The way to check is to call them up, if you booked a day for it to be done and they didn't do it, then definately call them up, and you may get it done the next day. Kame (312)

179903 2003-10-03 00:07:00 Ihug forgot to get telecom to activate it on the excange,
they are going to do it on monday,
I have calmed down a little bit,

By the way what do they have to do to activate it on your line? Flick a switch?
ilikelinux (1418)
179904 2003-10-03 02:33:00 Well flicking a switch would be too easy?

They first have to find your phone line, flick the switch, test it, then call you up :P
Kame (312)
179905 2003-10-03 07:32:00 they test your line to make sure it's in range, they check that it can connect at a minimum top speed of 2mbit and a whole list of other requirements (and if need be they'll fix the line so that it meets the list of requirements), then they plonk your line onto a card in the DSLAM bin and THEN they "flick the switch"

It's not a bullsh.. tax like some people would have you believe ;)

179906 2003-10-03 10:51:00 The thing that amazes me is, they have to contract someone out to go the exchange to do it for you. Why can't they just employ someone there full time to work there? PoWa (203)

That comment is not for real, surely?

There are a lot of exchanges in NZ, are you suggesting Telecom have a FTE (Full Time Equivalent) person at each one?

With the implementation of the newer electronic exchanges years ago, there is no longer the maintenance requiring permanent manning. None of us could afford ADSL if they decided to do as you suggest.

With LLU now a certainty, that would mean every ISP that wants to bundle ADSL would need to either contract Telecom staff (unlikely) or employ outside labour (as Telecom do now) to facilitate the connection.

179908 2003-10-03 13:34:00 Yeah, but they hire out a contracter to actually go to the exchange and enable the connection. Thats where you get the $99 conenction fee from. If the person actually worked for telecom on an on-call basis then it wouldn't be as expensive? PoWa (203)
