179895 2003-10-02 12:01:00 My old hard drive failed and it is not possible to install an OS on it or to boot a system in which it is attached (whether it is a master or slave). I can't even boot to an a: prompt without the system hanging as the OS loads. However, I was able to salvage some files after booting to a linux OS on a ramdrive using the cover CD from October 2002 NZ PC World. I burned the files to CD and accessed them later from Windows. One of the files I retreived was my old outlook.pst file. I seriously need to access my old e-mails.

I have tried to open or import the outlook.pst file from within Outlook by several means. I have tried File>Import>From another program or file. I have tried File>Open>Personal folders file. In both cases Outlook says that I don't have the necessary permissions to access the file. I have tried to substitute the file for my existing outlook.pst file before I start Outlook, but then Outlook won't start.

Here are some possibly relevant facts. My old system was running Windows 98 and Outlook 98. My present system is running Windows ME and Outlook 2000. My new system uses a different computer name and login name. I have a network card and protocols that were not installed before. Otherwise the hardware is the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions, work-arounds or can recommend any software utilities that might help?

179896 2003-10-02 12:20:00 The file on the CD will have a file attribute as read only.

Solution:
Copy file to the HDD. Click properties and untick read only.

Don't ask me how many emails I lost by not knowing this.

Cheers.

179897 2003-10-02 12:41:00 I have had no problems viewing the entire contents of a .pst, by mporting it into Outlook. Particularly where its been under an OS with not much security. godfather (25)
179898 2003-10-02 20:19:00 Thankyou very much, nomad, for the tip about the read only attribute. I tried it and it worked. I can't beleive that the solution was so simple. I should have known it too. You have saved me many hours and much frustration, not to mention the loss of my e-mail. mwarta (4675)
179899 2003-10-03 01:03:00 Check the MS knowledge search .. that was how I found it after losing months of emails...

U'll be surprised how many error messages are included in the database.
