180594 2003-10-05 04:32:00 I am thinking of getting a combo VCR/DVD unit to replace my old video in the bedroom. Only gets use when in bed sick or if the main video is being used.
Had a look round the net and can't find a review on the Digitor VCR/DVD (G1629) combo (the one at Dick Smiths). Does anyone have one and what do they think of it?
Mainly looking at it because it is aprox. $200 cheaper that the Samsung VCR/DVD combo.

Thanks

Jeff.

180595 2003-10-05 04:49:00 My experience of their products suggest it should be fine. They would not sell it under their "in house" brand if it wasn't up to scratch.

They even give the full region unlock code on the web page.

I suspect it will have a Macrovision unlock code as well, if you could track it down. It will probably be sold under another brand somewhere in the world, if you do a Google search on any model numbers you can find on it.

The price makes it attractive, it saves the clutter of 2 units.

180596 2003-10-05 09:07:00 Is it possible to record a DVD (that is being played) onto a video tape using the combo drive? vk_dre (195)

Macrovision? What's that, man?

This is close to the sort of device I want. I want one with a hard disk. My mate in San Fran has just upgraded to his second unit and has put a humongous 200Gb drive in it (he's a hacker, can't resist playing with the technology).

MV is the copy protection on DVDs (and some VHS pre-recorded cassettes) that "prevents" copying.
Some DVD players can defeat the MV system, the Mustek from DSE is one of them.
There is a secret menu for zoning, and another less publicised one for Macrovision defeat. Never tried it however.
