180350 2003-10-04 04:52:00 Is it time to look at replacing a desk top pc with a laptop. I notice with laptops wide screen, dvd writers, fast CPU,large hard drives etc can one assume they are now a suitable replacement for a desktop plus they have the advantage of being so portable if the need ever arises or is it better to retain the desktop and if needed buy a laptop as some are at a very reasonable price now. norrol (2154)
180351 2003-10-04 05:11:00 I run both, however your recognition of the prices being a lot more reasonable is correct. There are laptops out there now that would replace a desktop, without a huge price premium. I have colleagues that have done just that.

There is still the issue of laptops not being "upgradeable" apart from RAM, and the lack of suitable graphics grunt for the latest games. Thats usually not an issue for many users though (me included)

I see the current offering is $2300+GST for a 2.4 MHz Mobile Celeron, 256 MB DDR RAM, high res 15" screen, 30 MB HDD, all the bells and whistles, including a good digital camera (2+ Megapixel I think).

Some of the cheaper ones have desktop chips in them, and they do run quite hot. The Mobile versions are better in this respect. Many have Mobile chips but don't mention it in the ads.

180353 2003-10-04 05:19:00 Hi

Yes, certainly laptops are now fully capable of being desktop replacements. The only drawback is if u do need a v fast system for music/photo/video editing or really into games.

It depends on how u use the computer. However I find sync-ing files with the laptop and desktop a real pain. I personally only have one laptop and it does everything for me. Its 3yr old.

Some pple are happy with a desktop and a Palm/IPAQ.
Some are fine with one desktop or one laptop.
But if u are really into intensive tasks I think a desktop is better. Then perhaps a cheaper laptop on the go if u need a computer on the go.. The laptop is just not as fast for graphics and for editing a larger screen is preferred.

If u intend to do a lot of continual upgrades - get a desktop and perhaps a cheap laptop too if u need the mobility it gives. For a laptop u are v limited in upgrades, u can add RAM, drives, HDD, u cannot change the motherboard, CPU and the video card. For me my 600mhz is fine for dvd, and some casual photo editing. For some people that's not enof so a desktop may be better if u plan to upgrade parts.

And remember a laptop does weigh a bit. Other than weight it is like a mini briefcase in dimensions. Palm/IPAQ can be partnered with a desktop if you don't need some of the more advanced features.

180355 2003-10-04 05:54:00 The AMD laptops are multi-purpose.
They replace the cooktop on your stove as well as the heater in the room.

180356 2003-10-04 06:58:00 Goodness gracious me. My AMD2800+ only runs at 35 degrees.

Not enough to do my breakfast!!!

Make a note!!! Take some fans out.

They were too noisy anyway. :-)

Godfather was referring to AMD laptops, not desktops . I am considering getting one to take camping - will be able to kill two or three birds with one stone then . :p :D
