180679 2003-10-05 23:41:00 Could someone please tell me how to reinstall a BIOS. Been trying to obliterate a linux boot loader on our third computer and somehow we've managed to damage BIOS. The motherboard is a MS - 6154 (Microstar).
Ultimate aim is to install "Smoothwall Linux" as a firewall.
Be grateful for any advice.

180680 2003-10-06 00:04:00 It could you be your MBR ( Master Boot record ) not your Bios.

I have not read this link but it could be a start.

180681 2003-10-06 02:19:00 It would be difficult to destroy the BIOS. (Not impossible, but difficult :D).

If the FDISK /MBR doesn't make it look OK ... you could try one of the disk zapper programmes ... IBM give away one called zap.exe which wipes a couple of tracks to make the disk look "new". Use the search on this page for "zap.exe" and you'll find a link for that.

Another possibility ... if it's a Compaq Deskpro which has the BIOS setup programme and a few other things on a special ("invisible" to DOS) partition of the hard disk and you've deleted the partition you will need to download the files from Compaq to make a set of three floppies to install the partition .

If neither of these is helpful ... give us some more information. What is it? What did you do to it. What does it do when it is turned on?

Our omnisciece is pretty good, but our omnipresence is a bit limited. ]:)

180682 2003-10-06 06:08:00 Thanks guys. I have a bit more detail; I'm actually doing this for my son and he's given me more info.
He wanted to remove the Mandrake Boot Loader, as even when he set the BIOS to boot from cd rom the boot loader came up, even set to boot from floppy, the same thing. So, he used FDISK /MBR, which removed the boot loader, but now he gets the error message "Boot: Couldn't find ntldr".

180683 2003-10-06 06:32:00 Plainly the main issue is that the CD and Floppy are being ignored in the boot process, or have not been loaded with a bootable media. If they were in the process, it would not get to the HDD at all.

Removing the boot loader isn't the solution.
Getting the boot order is.

180684 2003-10-06 06:38:00 Are you trying to install windows again?

If so thats a good start, i now would delete all partition then make a dos partition then format it using fdisk.

you can not install windows on Linux partition!

180686 2003-10-06 07:22:00 Just had a call from my son; he's fixed it, used the FIX MBR command and it worked! He also stripped some of the internals out, took out 10 gig hard drive (left 6 gig one) and some of the ram (left 128 mbs) and is now installing windows which he will soon over write with Smoothwall, apparently that's what should be done, according to the manual. So it will be interesting to see how it works out.
Anyway, thank you very much everyone who posted onto this topic. I think this is a great forum, people really do try to help with great enthusiasm.
