180633 2003-10-05 12:51:00 Data from iPAQ 1940 to a SSD (Solid State Drive or 'thumbdrive) and/or back again. Any one know if it's possible?
I have a 128MB SSD and an iPAQ 1940. I don't really want to fork out big dollars for another memory SD card (the Misses would kill me!! ;\ ) so I'm am mearly wondering if it is possible to buy an adapter (USB socket to USB socket) and plug the two devices in to it?? They both have a USB plug. I think that's clear, but I know what I'm talking about!! :^O

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards

PS Oh, I know you can get the adapter, just the 'can it be done' side I'd like to know please! :D I'll be ya best friend!! :8}

180634 2003-10-05 20:33:00 USB by design is for device to computer and not device to device.

as far as I know it cant be done with out a computer in the system.

if you think about the fact that the computer controls the data flow to and from USB devices so if you connect two devices togeather then who/what will be in controll.

180635 2003-10-06 02:44:00 The iPAQ is a computer ...

A hub might be the answer . You wouldn't need a powered one. Since you've got the devices, why not ask a shop if you can try it in the shop: "No work -- no buy".?

You might be able to get the sockets (Jaycar have the plugs) and make a socket to socket adaptor. The outer connectors are +5V and ground ; the signal ones might be send/receive and need to be flipped ... I don 't know. :D The small type B ones are different (2 each side) and I can't offhand remember the pinout. (Look at the [u]more[/b] link on the DSE entry for a USB cable for that information).

180636 2003-10-06 03:31:00 You should be able to get a cable but what about drivers?
try asking for a 'USB PC-mac transfer cable'
(what you can use for programming on the playstation 2)
I've never seen one, but I know it is possible to have a USB network, so there must be a USB-USB cable.

180637 2003-10-06 03:49:00 I've just looked at the specs for the 1940. It says that the USB is a "Communications" port for connecting to the charger/synch cradle. It depends on how clever people got. They might not have put the hooks into the Pocket PC Windows; just the serial communications. :-(

I'd still try a USB hub ... if a new "disk" icon appears on the desktop, it should work. :D Otherwise ... all these tiny memory things are getting cheaper.

Pudney do a USB socket to USB socket adapter. Don't know if it's a 'change over' or 'straight through'. I don't particularly want to discover that 5V is being sent down the wrong cable!!! :O

However, about the two data transfer wires! Which one would be the 'uplink' and which the 'downlink'? Or maybe it dosen't matter!!?? :_|

From other posts and other sites, it seems I may be able to 'get away' with the fact that my iPAQ would be the 'computer' and the thumbdrive would be the 'plug in device'. So there shouldn't be a problem! (???)

Better check my Warrenty first before I start mucking around, a? ;\

180639 2003-10-08 00:32:00 There's no way a coupler would put the 5V onto a data line ... and anyway it wouldn't do any harm :D

The only concern I have (it's not my iPAQ ;-)) is that they might not have put the full USB capabilities on that port. A USB disk is more complicated than a serial port, which is all that that port was intended for. Many desktops will accept keyboards and mice on a USB port. There are mice which are "USB-serial-PS/2", and come with adaptor plugs. They have a subset of USB capabilities ... they don't pretend to be disk drives. The iPAQ might be similar ... just pretending to be a simple serial device for the synchronising operation when connected to a desktop.

180640 2003-10-08 03:34:00 There is a cable to xfer USB to USB called a USB Link cable to do just this function. This is a web page vintage 2001

www.homenethelp.com or try Google if no longer active.
