2003-10-08 21:26:00 | Running Windows ME and when I access control panel it says there are 37 objects but none are visible. Same when I access C drive. When I use windows explorer I can see the contents of the C drive fine but still unable to see control panel contents. Have downloaded tweakui to use the restore icons section but this programe is not visible in the control panel either. The whole system appears to be running quite slowly have used adaware to clean up the system. Any ideas what to try for this please.

2003-10-08 21:34:00 | Try starting into safemode. Try then getting into control panel. While there, have a look under device manager and see if you have any double up entries under Video adaptor and drives. | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-10-08 21:59:00 | thanks for that - we started in safe mode and could view our icons in the control panel but still not the tweakui programme that I had downloaded. Had a look in device manager and there were no double-ups. So, still got a problem in normal mode viewing the control panel icons.

2003-10-08 23:05:00 | Its a Compaq computer about 18 months old. Its a friends computer. Was hoping to fix it without reloading disks. I've been having a look on-line and come across a couple of ideas that I will try. 1/ editing the regsitry for a jscript problem. Not my first choice but I think there are other errors with jscript elsewhere so this may point to this as a solution. 2/ nortons suggest that it could have something to uninstalling antivirus (which was done awhile ago) so might look into this too. A trial version was downloded but unsuccessfully installed. There are also traces of McAfee antivirus software that was uninstalled too. No current antivirus software is operating. Otherwise a reload of Windows ME might be worth a try - however I don't think I have discs.

2003-10-08 23:23:00 | When I experienced this problem (at least the Control Panel aspect of it), it was as a result of losing patience with a flaky install of XP and reverting to ME. To make matters worse, ME could not find the CD drive, so even if I had an original ME disk, I couldn't use it (or so I thought). Courtesy of The Late PC Company, I had only a minimal "rescue disk". However, the PC Co rep advised changing the boot order of the disks, so the machine attmepted to boot first from the A: drive then from the CD (D:) then from the hard drive. Put the rescue disk in the drive and reboot. It worked and (almost) everything came back in good order (a few things needed reinstalling). So it's worth trying a "refresh" of ME if you have even a "rescue disk". and a refresh of this nature won'^^^^ shouldn't lose you any data. Good luck.

2003-10-08 23:26:00 | boot first from the A: drive then from the CD (bracket D colon bracket) then from the hard drive... Damn, I always forget you can't put drive letters in brackets in this forum (A:) (C:) (D:) :-)

2003-10-09 00:41:00 | Problem solved!! fixed with a combination of registry editing of the jscript.dll file and an adjustment in the control panel folder options to use the classic windows folder view. Happy computer It seemed to fix a lot of the other issues as well eg: media player , ability to log on to online banking etc thanks
