Then i suggest you do a defrag,Ive run xp on 500mhz machines with 128mb of ram that had no such issues.

Defrag it,and disable some start-up programs.

181474 2003-10-09 08:12:00 I do defrag, with diskeeper and all the starting progs that can be disabled are and half the services are set to manual...
my last XP desktop 1.3mhz comp did the same with 128mbs ram but was sweet after I added another 256...
any other secrets??

181475 2003-10-09 10:03:00 I run a ZE4315, with 256M shared . (2 . 2 GHz Mobile Celeron)

When I got it, I was intent on upping the RAM . However, I have not got around to it, and have to say I dont really think its an issue .

My main PC is a 2 GHz P4, and it has 512 MB of DDR RAM .

There is no discernable difference in performance .

You can choose not to allocate 64 MB to the video, it could be set to 32 MB (in BIOS I think)

181476 2003-10-09 18:37:00 sounds like you have the same laptop as me... so you never see the torch as it searches for it's contents?
I don't see it all the time, but I know from the last one (the 1.3) that the extra $100 made my computing experience a bit better (= worth it!)

realistically it's not a prob and only holds me up for a couple of seconds in that instant (who knows how many in other instances?) it IS the 21st century though!!

181477 2003-10-09 18:47:00 Adding RAM is very easy on that model, and I probably will do it one day.

No, I never see the torch as it searches the directories. That usually more a function of the number of folders/files more than RAM I believe, it needs to index them before it can display.

181478 2003-10-09 18:55:00 i don't have that much on this comp, is there a box to tick someplace to make it index the folders better? Trev O (452)
181479 2003-10-09 19:24:00 MS Office has "Find Fast" indexind, but thats only active for searching within Office (I think)

Usually its turned off, as it causes a lot of background activity.

Just tried something on my P4 with 512 MB RAM.

On a folder with 1500 files and 19 sub-folders, it brought up the torch for quite a while.

On a folder with 500 files, its only a momentary delay, no torch.

Its straight disk access time though, not RAM in this instance.

181480 2003-10-09 22:46:00 I don't think that office find fast button is enabled, so I'll do the ram thing one day soon
It's the 144 pin ram is it? and does it matter which one I buy from Tastech (homepages.paradise.net.nz) ?
