181788 2003-10-10 03:35:00 LOL.

Must be trying the same tactics as Rockstar Games releasing Grand Theft Auto 1 as free to download.

There's a thread on the PC Authority forums where someone suggested software companies should release their previous versions for free upon release of their latest software. This implied that Microsoft would release Windows XP as free to download upon the release of Longhorn.

The idealogy suggested behind that was that customers would get to trial previous products and upgrade to the latest version if they thought it was worth it.

Perhaps what they failed to realise is that a heck of a lot of people would be continually downloading the free versions, and a lot of companies would go bankrupt.

181789 2003-10-10 05:20:00 This novice's struggles have been all Internet & email so far, with never a thought for games. But now I am intrigued...
My computer's only Win98 yet seems to have adequate specs for Hidden & Dangerous, except for one. And I guess that's the biggie..
I have no video card.
So the question is: can I download the game but install it later - after I've bought one?
If so, I'd like advice on that later.
Meanwhile, if I'm living in a dream world, would somebody please confirm that I really DON'T know about games.

181790 2003-10-10 05:49:00 Hi Laura, unless you operate with a blank screen you have a video card. It may be incorporated into your motherboard but it is there, and is probably the equivalent of a physical board.
Just check your motherboard specs and see what they say you might be in with a chance without spending money!!
Yes you can download the game without being able to play it, but, if you have dailup it could take sometime, depending on how good your connection speed is. Overnight is a good start , but be aware it may take longer. Iwould get a download manager(I use Star Downloader) as this will enableyou to reconnect and resume downloading if you lose your connection.

181791 2003-10-10 07:43:00 Thank you Rod ger for your boost to my learning curve,
I guess it was the 3D bit that sounded rather high-flown for my 2nd hand former office machine. It's served me well for 6 months, but came with little info.
I didn't know there was a sound card on board until I bought my first speakers - so you'll gather that checking my motherboard specs isn't exactly 2nd nature. Like where are they...?
The light's too poor to do it tonight (Don't ask) so hopefully someone will answer before I do it tomorrow.
Yes, I have dialup..and a slow connection..so I'm grateful for the download manager suggestion.
Off to search the Web for one.
(I don't suppose I'm likely to find THAT hidden in the machine as well, am I?)

181792 2003-10-10 07:52:00 Right click your "my computer " icon choose properties, then look for device manager, this will give you a list of the hardware in your system, the video will be listed under Display Adaptors.

As for download managers,i use and recomend Flashget,Has a lot of excellent features and to keep it simple it creates its own folder called downloads where it deposits everything you grab off the net.

You can get it here http://www.flashget.com

181793 2003-10-10 08:09:00 When you bought you computer they most often come with a Manual, sometimes several(for different components), if not paper ones then on CD. This should have the details in it. Rod ger (316)
