181457 2003-10-08 21:02:00 I have found what I believe to be a fault with Windows XP that could be fixed by a patch de jour from Microsoft?

When a USB memory device is plugged into a Windows XP PC that is normally connected to but currently unplugged from a network, and it has drive letters mapped to a network drive that are not presently available because the network is unplugged, the drive letter assigned to the USB device is the same as the first mapped network drive letter.

A normal user can not easily find this as the mapped network drive letter does not change it's "title" to show the removeable device, but keeps the same description as the original network share, even if a page refresh (F5)is requested.

The drivers in use are Microsofts own plug N play drivers.

Has anyone seen this before? I can not find any reference to it on the Microsoft support pages.

181458 2003-10-08 22:28:00 reassign the usb device drive letter in disk mangement, once reassigned it should keep that drive letter assignment no matter how many times it is unpluged or pluged back in. beama (111)
181459 2003-10-09 00:36:00 It's what you get with a "user-fiendly intuitive" system. :D So that users aren't bothered with little details like this, the default is to automatically change things. And it causes problems. I don't like that. ;-) It's good to find there's a way around this. I wonder if it works in WinMe. Graham L (2)
181460 2003-10-09 06:14:00 Thanks guys .

I was just making a note of a fault I found .

I prefer linux to the Redmond bohemouth . Once a resource is taken, there's no way it will be re-allocated without the surperusers intervention .

Check out Knoppix, Linux live on CD if you've never tried Linux before . No install necessary . You can buy a local copy for as little as $5 .
