2.5" ide hardrive

Ok got an old laptop, No harddrive, powers up ok and works okayish with a linux live cd
Doesn't seem to boot from USB thumbdrive as that was originally going to be my cunning plan as it just needs to surf the net etc.
There don't seem to be any new 2.5" ide drives out there obviously, and the second hand ones are ridiculously expensive for a second hand Harddrive

I remember see a tutorial on adding a sata drive, in place of the builtin CD rom, but for the life of me I can't find it.
Putting a sata to ide adaptor on a sata drive in the current harddrive bay would obviously not work as there is less than 1cm of wiggle room and no power connector.

Alternatively it does have a floppy drive, could i use that to boot a usb stick?

Any useful suggestions would be appreciated

1348750 2013-07-13 00:04:00 Ok rooting round in BIOS, found both USB options were turned off,
USB Host controller
USB Bios Legacy support
Turned them both on.

I have burned a cd, with PLOP boot manager on it to try to allow me to boot from the USB drive, and although PLOP loads and has a USB option when I select it it just loops back to the plop screen

.

Also found the info on installing a harddrive in the cdrom slot, but at this point I think I'll keep seeing if I can get this blasted thing to boot

1348751 2013-07-13 00:37:00 If you've got an ISO of whatever see if Rufus works (http://rufus.akeo.ie/). It'll format the flash drive (so make sure there's nothing on it, that you want, and select the right letter for it before you format it), then it'll extract whatever from the ISO to the flash drive. And it'll make it bootable (if the ISO is bootable).

And it'll hopefully boot. If that laptop supports booting from USB

If it doesnt, I would check and see if there are any later BIOS updates for it. The USB boot option would (probably) be under the boot menu, if its there

Its what I used to install Win7 on this netbook. Since it doesnt have a cd/dvd on it. And the only way you can install anything on it is with a flash drive

1348752 2013-07-13 03:24:00 No, it doesn't natively boot to USB, hence using the PLOP bootloader on CD, although I think i'm going to have to do it on Floppy disk so i can set the default USB mode for PLOP, as I finally figured out the reason it wasn't working was i hadn't set USB to "Force 1.1" and then select Mode 2, not a clue what it actually means but i got there by playing, so Just got to either remember to do that each time or put it on a floppy so i can save the setting.

Ironically i bought this machine for a whopping $2.50 = $12 shipping as i was hoping to repair my other machine an Evo 1015v that dropped dead a few years ago, unfortunately ones AMD the others intel, should have bloody checked, but anyway apart from no actual hardrive i have cobbled together a working machine, just a pity neither of them had a working battery or hardrive.

Cheers

1348753 2013-07-13 03:49:00 So what are you going to install on it? Linux or Windows? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1348754 2013-07-13 07:25:00 As there is no harddrive it'll have to be Linux for now, no real problem with linux, although windows would be preferable as I could then do some extra work on it using specific windows programs.

Besides last time I got a second hand hardrive it only lasted a few months.

Just have to get the internet working, known bug, but only one distro out of the dozen or so i have downloaded will boot via the USB, mind you i am wondering if thats more the pendrive than the distros
