NZ is going ahead with our UFB proposals - starting to connect schools already.

It looks like the whole world is going high-tech mad

A report in the UK says that instead of propping up car manufacturing they should be investing in high tech companies.

In the USA Google has put FREE UFB in to Kansas City.
once part of the dust belt - high tech entrepenurs are moving there in droves.

They are calling it Silicon Praire

And in Africa the Kenyan goverment is spending BILLIONS building a whole new city to be based on high tech industries!
This will be called Silicon Savannah

The above is all true

Will NZ be called Silicon Paddock ?

1325175 2013-01-27 08:25:00 Yup, high speed data is very important IMO, however we shouldn't let our other infrastructure or exports slide. Just like in the 1800's good sewerage & water supply was essential & a mark of a countries weallth and wellbeing UFB is a staple for modern development. It isn't however the ONLY thing we should work on. The Error Guy (14052)
1325176 2013-01-27 08:26:00 Its going to require some moving and shaking when it comes to international data though, on multiple levels.... Chilling_Silence (9)
1325177 2013-01-27 08:46:00 Yes and although I support high tech etc (eg my website) and I admire NZ companies doing it

I cant help thinking that the whole world cannot be doing high tech.

How many apps do we need

And who is buying them? (not me)

And a lot of it is NOT REALLY high tech.

The high tech has already been done.

Its thinking of the need for the app etc.

But then you have to make it pay.

1325180 2013-01-27 21:39:00 Well if you consider tablets/smarthones high tech, there seems to be companies producing variants everyday, and perhaps from uncommon sectors. Like Polaroids tablets (www.polaroidtablet.com/), Samsungs rumoured 8 inch tablet, (http:) Now car maker Hyundai's new tablet (blog.laptopmag.com) and Amazon's upcoming smartphone. (www.eweek.com) Also many partnerships in PC tech industry emerging daily. Mainly other countries - including India/UK and I read somewhere even Turkey producing tablets. Little down here in NZ. A finnish minister was critical of NZ, not having much to show in the tech world. With few tech niche products (e.g. Taits, Marine tech,), NZ just imports and sells, not much hardware production it seems.

Yeah, the real tech is the conception and designing of the hardware on which it all runs.

Everything after that (software) is just plain old coding in one form or another, and despite the fact that languages abound, and come and go from vogue all the time, it all still boils down to just 1's and 0's for a processor.
The true magic is in what that hardware will allow.

1325182 2013-01-28 03:10:00 Well the schools need fibre because there are lots of kids on one connection. Also, with eLearning tools the additional bandwidth is much appreciated.

On the other hand, primary schools don't need it. Who ever it is in Govt and the private bodies that govern primary education who keeps saying kids below the age of 14 need laptops & tablets is moronic. They don't learn ANYTHING at that age that will benefit from a computer. The worst part is they keep saying the kids need iPads... now I hate the fact they are saying they should even have tablets, but why iPads?

End rant at the system, but the whole thing is nuts.
