| 1325006 | 2013-01-27 00:10:00 | The author refers to the NZ public to make a call. But how would one define the NZ public? And presumably a New Zealander today? In 1975 in Maunkau - I noticed there were predominantly two "NZ" race/enthic groups around Manakau. The way it was for a long time. They I suspect were from earlier generations of NZ's and contributed perhaps to it's growth. Today it's a melting pots of all sorts from India, Asia, SE Asia, Pacific Islands, UK, and South Africa. Inherently with their own cultures, values, aspirations and similar. Should they have much say in their adopted country - NZ - about Maori seats or related matters? They probably had little say or satisfaction in their own countries. |

| 1325007 | 2013-01-27 00:30:00 | Well written blog (assuming the subject is also well researched - although I find myself nodding to many of the points he makes. But that might just be me!) No-one wants to bite the bullet and deal with the maori situation, because it's political suicide. As soon as anyone in power tried to stand up and apply an even hand to the NZ political arena by wiping out a 'minority' group's special privileges, they would be branded racist, especially if they were white. I wonder what would happen if some of our new kiwis from Asia stood up? I imagine, as a group, they are probably now more prolific than the so-called indigenous population... |

| 1325010 | 2013-01-27 06:39:00 | I feel they summed it up best in the second to last paragraph: Are we to be a nation, or merely a collection of disparate tribes and cultures all fighting for our own self-interest, heedless of the greater good? Every society has different elements and interests, but for the greater good these interest groups should be encouraged to sink their differences as much as possible and join in the same great common enterprise. The unthinking celebration of diversity which has recently begun to darken our national life carries a very dangerous potential to tear our country apart. And yes Asians are very close behind Maoris now: en.m.wikipedia.org I for one think its a horrible idea keeping the seats and simply gives them "special treatment" allowing for over-representation and additional powers simply because of how MMP as a system works. If we used FPP it would be a complete non-issue.... |

Erm NZ doesn't have and never has had an indigenous population, even the Maori claim to have come from somewhere else. And they also claim there were already people here who were non Maori |
