1324900 2013-01-25 20:25:00 Yea, I saw that too.

Xtra has 500gb
Orcon has "unlimited"

Don't know about the rest, I tried talking to telecom to see if this 500gb cap was traffic managed. I don't want to pay for an Internet connection that gets bogged down when people start torrenting. All I got told was if I go over I can get slowed down or pay more

1324901 2013-01-25 20:25:00 They recently sent me brochures to try ramp up to 150GB, from my 80 GB. But now 500 GB? But it's all for home/landline broadband. My mobile data plan has barely been mentioned nor promoted on their website. I had to ring them as I forgot what data plan I had. They had renamed it. They should ramp up mobile data, promote it, rather than constantly bleating on about home packages. kahawai chaser (3545)
1324902 2013-01-25 20:49:00 I remember Snap being the first to offer 500gb, looks like telecom is copying them. nedkelly (9059)
1324903 2013-01-25 21:38:00 Our connection with trustpower kinect has NO data cap. It's great. I couldn't imagine having to worry about data caps.

500gb is pretty good though, for NZ.

Yes but for us it worked out much more expensive as their power prices are higher, we did do some serious comparison and unfortunately even though we were keen the numbers didn't stack up. Trustpower are on the right track but they don't suit all households yet

1324905 2013-01-26 00:32:00 Glad I'm not the only one who was amazed by it.
Its such a huge jump from say 150 gig to 500.

1324906 2013-01-26 02:51:00 Yes, I'd rather have money off the calls or landline.
I use 3 - 10GB.
Usually 3GB.

1324907 2013-01-26 05:45:00 Aimed at large households I imagine, here we go through about 100gb monthly. Mostly skype, non Orcon VoIP calls, streaming media and general downloads. I'm off the torrents now so this is a reflection of our normal habits.

When you consider download is the preferred option to distribute now its makes sense. Games (about 15-20gb each) take a big hit on your monthly bill. If you are in a situation like I will be in a months time, if 3x people download even just one game in a month thats 60gb + 20 gb per flat mate for normal browsing makes for 160gb. Assuming we don't have a TV (probably wont) that figure will go up since we'll probably use Hulu/Netflix or TVNZ ondemand. All of a sudden that 500gb looks much nicer.

Also, online backups + cloud storage are much easier when you have a big cap. Most NZ households won't bother with cloud until they can backup without caring about data usage.

1324908 2013-01-26 06:16:00 Video shops may get a bit of competition should the cap increase but they may need a heck more. It may not be uncommon to ask for a few movies each week or maybe a season of a series like Grey Anatomy when they may stay home and just watch the lot ... ie, commercial online hirers if there is gonna be such a thing...

I would not use cloud service for everything the transfer speed is too too slow for TBs .. maybe just the essentials maybe.

I think that free television will still be king thou, turn on and you know what is on and it's free for the essentials and if you in no hurry to catch the series. Perhaps more competition for cable tv though ..

Seen the local video hirers go a bit silent now with availability of internataional cable channels maybe online will change this once again .... or even series straight from the USA, may be reached a lot quicker than waiting for your supplier to broadcast them. Transacted in foreign currency real time of course. Should not need GST too.
