1324829 2013-01-25 04:39:00 Anyone know of a good techy in Picton that can deal with one of clients where attention is required when I cant get to it such as Virus removal issues and the like where hands on is required.

I am aware of one up there, but am not satified with their results.

Thanks all for any help.

1324830 2013-01-25 04:55:00 See how much it costs to send Wainui over on the ferry? the_bogan (9949)
1324831 2013-01-25 05:38:00 Not as silly as it sounds, have thought about in the case of laptops, getting them to the ferry at picton if they can be picked up from the ferry in Welly.

Actually, for the cost my client pays to get his laptop messed up by the local guy and then the hours I have to work on it to get it working correctly again, my client would probably get the local float plane and fly WT from Welly straight into the beach and back again, that would save 1/2 day of ferry travel.

1324832 2013-01-25 06:21:00 If its only a virus boot it into safe mode / networking and put teamviewer on it. I could have a look Speedy Gonzales (78)
1324833 2013-01-25 07:15:00 Yeh, I could as well. He has the FBI Moneypak Virus (guides.yoosecurity.com) on it. I reckon 1/2 hour would take care of it, last I heard the guy (tech) who now has it is doing a windows install over the top of the existing one.

Last time the guy had it, it went in for a simple job and was returned the next day with Win XP SP2 and IE7 on it (when it originally had Sp3 & IE 8 and all updates on it), I'm guessing thats how it will come back again.

Please excuse the language here, but is he F**King kidding doing a repair install over the top wont cure it - LOL To remove the FBI is a piece of cake, esp if its the ones linked ..

30 Minutes -- ;) Time to make a cuppa as well.

Easy to remove ---

Go put the jug on ---- now start in safe mode - open the regedit, navigate to the run folder under HKEY Current User etc. look for a random named .exe file Right click it, look at the path to where its located. Then delete the Run entry -- go to the location the run entry was right click the exe - Delete - empty recycle bin. Its often in a Application Data Folder in XP, and AppData\Roaming in Vista/W7 Also pays to open the %Temp% folder and double check theres not a copy of it there.

OPPS - jugs boiled time to make that cuppa, still got 20 minutes to drink it :D

If the PC wont run in safe mode, theres other ways of removing it, just need a bootable CD, something like Ubuntu.

Sounds like a bit of a cowboy if you ask me :2cents:

Edited: BTW -- Wouldn't be the first time I've had people courier me PC's to fix if they wanted to send one.

1324835 2013-01-26 00:05:00 Agree with you 100% WT. Thats what I thought. I'll contact my client on Monday and find out how it all went. Cheers. Iantech (16386)
1324836 2013-01-28 06:29:00 well, my clients managed to get it back in Monday late afternoon. Clients says "oh, he said he had to do a lot of work to get it sorted out".
Asked him to open the browser, it crashed every time he opened it until I got him to go into internet options and change homepage to google so it would at least load, then asked him to look at the version........ IE6!!
Then asked him to right click My computer and read it to me......... Service pack 2...
Asked him what antivirus was installed.....spybot icon down near the clock was all......

Oh dear, this guy has installed over the top and not even bothered updated anything or putting an AV software in. What a bloody butcher!!!
Very upsetting to see this sort of stuff going on and people expecting to be paid for it. client is not planning a trip to Chch to get it to me to fix properly.
