(www.nzherald.co.nz) I do a bit of cycling on our cycle pathways down here and quite often on hot days pass cyclists not wearing helmets but instead are hanging on the handlebars. It is actually cooler wearing the helmet on a hot day then not wearing it. Cycle helmets are basically made from polystyrene which is about half an inch thick and they are well ventilated. This acts as an insulation from the heat of the sun which is a lot better than having it beating down on your head without a helmet on. :) |

| 1324731 | 2013-01-24 20:22:00 | I couldn't agree more Trev, on my rides to work I see so many mothers escorting their kids to school and invariably the mothers are not wearing helmets setting a real bad image for the kids to follow. Here in Christchurch because it is so flat compared to Nelson a lot more people cycle and so helmet wearing is definitely lower here | gary67 (56) | ||

Lots of cyclists these days seem to think it's not 'cool' to wear a helmet (although not many roadies - mainly mountain bikers and recreational riders, around town) and unfortunately the police seem to have better things to do than enforce cycle helmet laws... |

| 1324737 | 2013-01-24 22:46:00 | The police should be charging a few people and fining them to give people the message that it is the law. Its the same when they banned mobile phone use in cars, everyone carried on doing it as the cops did not enforce the law. |

I am all for education and the compulsory fitting of seatbelts, the provision of life jackets for all on board a vessel etc. But with the exception of making it a legal responsability to ensure the safety of your children and or passengers it should stop there. It is sad when a young person is hurt but it is a reflection of the fact that we wrap them in cotton wool so much that they arrive at there teens without the inbuilt knowledge that if you do stupid things you get hurt. Incidentaly I fitted child seats and safety belts in all my cars long before it was compulsory to do so. Plain common sense in my view. |
