1324198 2013-01-22 00:40:00 To paraphrase a Peter, Paul and Mary song, where have all the cicadas gone?

It is hot in Auckland, lovely weather for the cicadas one would have thought, but I can't hear them.

I have heard one or two, albiet very briefly, but I have not heard the usual chorus of thousands.

I understand that they hibernate (?) underground through the cold weather and re-emerge in summer, but it seems that their alarm clocks are not working.

Is this the case throughout the country, or only in Auckland?

1324199 2013-01-22 01:12:00 The cicada is the one of the world's loudest insects, recording sounds of up to 120 decibels. Below 22 degrees Centigrade, the resounding sections of the diaphragm lose their elasticity. For this reason the cicada shuts up during rain or after sunset.

I'm quite glad they haven't started en mass, well, they have, there was some earlier, then it went mostly quiet again, no doubt it will come back.

1324200 2013-01-22 01:28:00 Haven't had any here yet. Bit surprising actually. Nick G (16709)
1324201 2013-01-22 01:30:00 It most likely isn't a cicada year. They can spend years underground. Terry Porritt (14)
1324202 2013-01-22 02:03:00 They are underground as pupae for about 15 years ,a few around here and as I feed Tui I have a young one which get feed Cicadas by mum when any are around Lawrence (2987)

1324204 2013-01-22 02:14:00 Saw the neighbours cat deal to one just yesterday.

Gareth Morgan might have a point about puddy. I've had 3 dead birds on the lawn the last month, nests with eggs but without birds, and this hunter killer puddy tat keeps on torturing anything that moves.

1324206 2013-01-22 02:31:00 ~ 7 shells sitting on the tree outside work today... but no noise =\ strange really. But I agree Feb/March we'll hear the hum agains. lordnoddy (3645)
1324207 2013-01-22 02:43:00 Had one "clicking" away like mad at home on Sunday.

Raced inside to get camera and macro lens, then couldn't find the blighter (the cicada that is) :(
