1325183 2013-01-28 03:17:00 Well the schools need fibre because there are lots of kids on one connection. Also, with eLearning tools the additional bandwidth is much appreciated.

On the other hand, primary schools don't need it. Who ever it is in Govt and the private bodies that govern primary education who keeps saying kids below the age of 14 need laptops & tablets is moronic. They don't learn ANYTHING at that age that will benefit from a computer. The worst part is they keep saying the kids need iPads... now I hate the fact they are saying they should even have tablets, but why iPads?

End rant at the system, but the whole thing is nuts.

Why iPads?? Because it's the only name that the schools know about and it has become nearly a generic term for a tablet with so many people.. Though in saying that my sister-in-law just went an bought 15 Samsung Tab2s for her school last week..

And iPads, because many schools are Apple-centric - that's where our taxes are being spent...

1325185 2013-01-28 06:17:00 If iPads and tablets are needed for educational purposes the schools should supply them, I have never understood why this country expects the parents to supply all the things that are needed for education.

That's governments job to educate the masses and supply the tools to do so, I bet if they were paying for it then it would be the cheapest Chinese tablets they could buy instead of trying to make everyone buy an expensive iPad

Other than what they scab off the long-suffering taxpayer.... johcar (6283)

1325188 2013-01-28 06:43:00 I wouldn't have a problem if iPads were the correct tool for the job, if they wanted to buy tablets for a beauty salon for customers to browse the web, woohoo go ahead.

In schools an iPad is not up to the task of providing catered educational resources in a cost effective package. Not to mention the damage potential.

The govt would be better investing in developing their own tablet, running WinRT/Pro or Android. A tough design, average specs and good "rugged" potential. Could be used not just by schools but all the govt sectors (DOC, Council etc) would make a lot of sense to me. Design catered to the exact specs required and repairs easy. No relying on a 3rd party.

1325189 2013-01-28 08:16:00 Yeah, the real tech is the conception and designing of the hardware on which it all runs.

Everything after that (software) is just plain old coding in one form or another, and despite the fact that languages abound, and come and go from vogue all the time, it all still boils down to just 1's and 0's for a processor.
The true magic is in what that hardware will allow.

Utter rubbish!!

The true magic is in the algorithms that are designed to do things faster, better.
Like tide forecasting developed by Lord Kelvin and others in the 1800s.
The FFT (fast Fourier transform) by Singleton in the 1960s.
Wavelet analysis by numerous people in the 1980s.
Fractal analysis by Mandelbrot in the 1990s.
One day, it will be extending weather forecasting beyond the 7 days when chaos ruins things.

Hardware is just a tool, no different to a chisel.
It's what a person does with the chisel that's magic.

Yeah I been thinking that too. Why can't we (NZ) build a tablet. Then again have we ever built a simple calculator? Can't be that hard, got talented educated people, and wealthy backers/angel investors here to do so.

It would be a bit silly for NZ to make one.
But some African companies are now making mobile phones and tablets etc
And I see there is a Spanish company doing some as well.
