1325071 2013-01-27 11:19:00 How about the WOF period be determined by the distance traveled between warrants? My car does less than 10,000Km a year. Once a year would be quite adequate! mzee (3324)
1325072 2013-01-28 01:22:00 If they were serious about saving us money they'd eliminate GST and Regional Govt taxes and replace them all with a Poll Tax.

Doing so would shift all the burden of these current taxes off the business community and onto central Govt. Every business in the country would feel the benefit of being free of this accounting burden, and consumers would enjoy lower prices.

Instead they waste all this time on poking around with the workings of one single industry, and make the dubious claim that it's to save us money. Rubbish.

Perhaps the spin off will be that the WOF centres get a bit kinder in how they deal with vehicles older than 2000 models, as these older parts of the fleet will earn them twice the income that testing newer cars will generate, and they'll be keen to keep those old cars on the road.

If that eventuates, it may indeed result in reduced safety for all, across the entire vehicle fleet.

We all know how that went down like a lead balloon for Maggie.

1325074 2013-01-28 02:24:00 It's not a biggie for the average motorist. Maybe it's just the govt adding these little things into the feel good accomplishment basket for fellow NZders....

Kinda strange thou with the date of registration. That means if a car was purchased in NZ then it was onsold to someone else .. that's 6 months but if someone bought the same year car as an second hand import it's 1yr. I think the guys at Turners would use it as a sales pitch. Up to 13yrs of half price WOFs ...

If it is gonna be 1yr, maybe the standards will be different. Ie. tyre thread left etc .. brake pad thickness ... Maybe people will be having servicing more freq than before.

People may start to wound the odometers back during their own possession.

Yup, and I don't know how they'd have any hope of collecting it from so many of our 'itinerant' population, short of deducting it from their benefits at the source.
It's the practicalities of collecting it that really kill a Poll tax.

1325077 2013-01-28 04:02:00 I hope they require more tyre tread for 1 year warrants, or lots of people will be driving on bald tyres. Greven (91)
1325078 2013-01-28 04:13:00 I hope they require more tyre tread for 1 year warrants, or lots of people will be driving on bald tyres. 1. There already are too many people driving on bald tyres. Walk past any ten cars in a public car park. You'll be horrified....2. I understand when they check tyres at a WOF inspection, a judgement call is made as to whether there is sufficient tread to last until the next warrant. Irrespective of that, if the car is given a warrant, and a cop finds insufficient tread a couple of weeks later, the recently-issued WOF won't stop you getting a ticket. johcar (6283)

It was actually up to you to make sure your tyres are OK between Warrants previously so what has changed now.
You can see cars on the road without Warrant or rego and those people aren't going to change.

Exactly. If safety was the issue there would be a higher degree of enforcement. johcar (6283)
