1325042 2013-01-27 07:50:00 Its very difficult watching a family member deteriate especially when they dont notice it themselves.........
My mum has Dementia, which is not helped by small strokes in the frontal lobe. so her cognitive, mental ability and memory is affected...... with her last stroke she forgot who i was...... Mum has got to the stage at times its like living with a 2 year old in a adults body. In a couple of weeks we will be celebrating her 80th birthday.
Her biggest bugbear is why doesnt my dad visit us........ he died 4 years ago, emphesymia related illness's. Mum cant comprehend what dead is... says he should still visit..... :) its kinda funny. and if we dont laugh its a long time to be crying, life just has to move on.

Look after yourself pctek take one day at a time and treasure the time you have :)

1325043 2013-01-27 08:38:00 My sympathy beetle. My mum died in 2004 after nearly 5 years of dementia, ending in 18 months where she was semi-comatose having everything done for her. Breaks your heart to see it happen. Just try and remember how she was in good years.

1325044 2013-01-27 19:04:00 Yeah, that's sad Beetle, and you can't fix it either. Compared to that, occasional surreal conversations with my husband are minor really.... pctek (84)
1325045 2013-01-27 19:20:00 So was he doign anythign wrong fro those 43 years ? or is it just bad luck?

.
For the first, I don't know, 15 years or so, there were no blood tests, you had to test urine, so it was always miles out - after the fact sort of thing .
Wildly inaccurate .

He also worked for the PO/Telecom and did shift work .
He also had old style insulin, take it and then keep up with the next 12 hrs . He couldn't come home and sleep, he'd have to get up after a few hours .
So . . . lot's of lows .

Also they go on about high . A lot . All the time .
When he was first in hospital they showed him all the people getting bits amputated, on dialysis, blind and so on so he got a horror of it and erred on the side of low . Very well . Too well .

There is a 3 month test the docs do that shows the average, his always came out at what they would say is excellent .

Eventually when I started paying attention to it all (I didn't know him for the first several years of all this, and then had to learn about it the hard way), it annoyed me cause the average was achieved by low/high/OK .

Not consistent middle of the road .
I spent years trying to get them interested but low is not a problem .
No amputations, dialysis and stuff you see . . . .

Also, what low does to you isn't something they can do much about . They eventually got new insulins and he went on short acting stuff more often, which helped some .

But there is a term called Brittle Diabetes, some decided that's what he has and 1)It's an ongoing debate 2)There haven't been a lot of studies 3)Some don't want to know

He also has Hypoglycemic Unawareness, something they can happen after a long time .
So, no symptoms at all, no awareness, no warning until he falls over or starts talking **** - if he is talki9ng that is .

Dangerous to say the least .

1325046 2013-01-28 01:31:00 Diabetes was basically what took my brother in law, who's been gone for over a decade, way too young.

Messed up his eyes, his kidneys and his heart.
Surgery messed him up further with infections involving where they'd wired his rib cage together. Surgery after surgery to cut out more infected bits.

Diabetes is a very nasty illness. Sadly almost everyone takes it for granted because you can live for decades before the damage(s) become aparent and all start to take their toll.
