1324839 2013-01-28 06:54:00 Sorry, ment to say "client is NOW planning a trip to Chch to get it to me to fix properly. " and not not.

Gary, how long would it take to drive from Nelson to Picton?
I've told my client to stop using this guy, he's just a screw up and costing my client money.
Anyone know of anyone in Blenheim? (might be an option also).

1324841 2013-01-28 09:32:00 Holey crap --- How can anyone charge after doing such a disgusting half hearted job, AND not even upto date. Chances are very good its still infected or at least damaged system file wise. :groan:

What a bloody butcher!!! That's an understatement.

If the system was that bad to start with, as in more than the FBI infection it would have been easier and more than likely quicker to save data , wipe drive and at least install with SP3.

1324842 2013-01-28 10:22:00 Why don't you just get it couriered to you, that's what I do with friends and family not in the area. Alex B (15479)

Between 1 1/2 - 2 hours depending on the roads to Nelson, Blenheim is much nearer 1/2 an hour at most

1324844 2013-01-28 20:38:00 Why don't you just get it couriered to you, that's what I do with friends and family not in the area.Takes a day to get down, and if I have time to fix it and get it back on the courier, a day to get back. Client is the owner of a business, and needs it for work and being without it for 2-3 days is not an option if it can be avoided. ie: there is a tech that can fix it in a few hours if thats whats needed - who isnt a butcher!!

WT, client says, "It doesnt go straight into windows like it used to, now I get a screen come up with Ian (his name) and 'user2' and I have to log into user2 ...."
So his old profile is still there it seems, but this guy has just banged Win Xp SP2 over the top, created a new profile and is calling it fixed, no updates, no nothing. So like you am guessing it is still infected. Im guessing there must be a few crappy-running computers in Picton if his guy is managing them.

1324846 2013-01-29 11:13:00 oh dear, was out doing some work at another business today and they asked me to look at one of thier computers.
The story goes...
It had the FBI virus on it, their guy who maintains the website decided to do a Win XP install over the top of it (yep, another moron) and got 3/4 installed until he realised he didnt have an XP PID to put in. So then tried running a Win7 disk on it using the upgrade option (because he didnt want to wipe any existing client files) which he got so far until it rebooted and tried to boot itself into XP setup again.....

Theres some real idiots out there.

1324847 2013-01-29 20:09:00 OMG -- idiots is being polite. Dont these people know the basics.:groan: Most Techs i know have a collection of various OS, that can be used to repair or reinstall if required. All they need is the COA and a few brains -- these people seem to be lacking both :p

Maybe we should get together and send these people something to read;

I've been accused of going to far with repairs, but my theory is its better to save stuff on a drive before working just in case something turns pear shaped - never lost anyones data yet, and theres a high chance they dont have backups. And if you do have to do a complete reinstall of OS and programs you have saved their data to replace it.

General Procedure I do is,make an image of the original Drive AS IS - put that image onto a blank HDD, either fire it up in their PC, or at least slave it to a workshop PC to make sure the data is safe. Put drive aside, NOW work on persons PC. Once fixed wipe the backed up image & drive that was made. Return to customer.
