persistence & attitude.
Treat your job hunt like a full time job, ie 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

^^ Best advice!

If you're not putting in 40 hours a week into finding a job, you're half-assing it and somebody else will likely get the jobs you want!

1324714 2013-01-25 05:36:00 Job seeking can be strange.
If one extrapolates and be more willing to get experience even thou it's not that related, you may get shot down because you were too honest if they ask you about your goals/passion even for contract roles when someone may be temporarily away for whatever reason.

One place a big org, worked there before, I retrained in finance, the first interview I just missed out, I think, it went well. Another position opened up but in a diff area still finance. There was an individual who paused the interview at the beginning b/c she said she wasn't sure if I was aware of the position then it went down hill from there. They had my CV, they knew I just completed a course in finance even thou I worked in a diff area before, I got the interview. One time the person said, if it had not been for an introduction to finance when I worked in a project my experience in finance is rather limited. Well, couldn't argue with that, just said yes and that confirmed from the moment I stepped in it was a failed attempt, dunno why I got the interview. And going by the advert, many of the advert or JDs attached are quite generic, they may even be the exact same one that was used a few months back. I never know what they are looking for even thou I get the interview. And when it comes to agencies, they disregard what you studied before if you happen to retrain and just get you to do jobs you did before but if the employer ask .. I see you did a course recently in this area so what appealed to you to apply for this position :stare: If you are starting out young it may not be that bad, cos you could just get some entry experience even if it happens to be admin for a IT company and hopefully down the track they open the door. Not so easy for those who worked before in decent areas and on the CV it suddenly flashes out career change, retrained (for passion/interest). Passion yes, prev worklife yes, real experience nope.

1324715 2013-01-26 13:07:00 alright, thanks for the info all. i only just now remembered i'd made this thread after all that, studylink paperwork's had me distracted the past couple days. And path of exile. that thing is goooood.
I wasn't expecting to land straight into sys admin shoes, but it is pretty much my goal, I think.
It seems enough of a people role to not be boring and enough of a tech role to pay well. I'm not actually overly interested in computers, at least not in the coding side of them. I've always been far more into making them work properly, and sys admin seemed to be a great balance position from what I saw of it from the useless, useless sys admin at highschool.

Also remember, despite all that has been said in this thread, don't be discouraged or afraid to apply for a sysadmin job straight away. Of course things have changed since I graduated, however I got the job I ended up with by applying for a senior role I was horribly underqualified/underexperienced for - it turns out they liked my attitude and (for obvious reasons I didn't get that particular role), I was offered something that they hadn't advertised, but was suitable for me.
