Interestingly, they feed on the xylem of the plant which is less nutritious than the phloem, thus it takes them years to mature. Different species have different years developing underground but there are usually some around each year. There is one species which spends 17 years underground. user (1404)
1324209 2013-01-22 03:49:00 Strange! I hear them all year round. I'm afraid that my cicadas' are called tinitus, Cicadas must be very loud before I notice them. Bryan (147)

1324212 2013-01-22 07:50:00 Maybe a bit to early. As someone has already mentioned February March. I know down here we don't hear them until mid February.

1324213 2013-01-22 09:36:00 I would hide my sorrow extremely well if the last cicada had just died. Or the last cat. R2x1 (4628)

1324215 2013-01-22 18:55:00 I'm more worried about where have all the frogs gone and where have all the honey bees gone. Digby (677)
1324216 2013-01-23 01:14:00 Bees, yes. I have a few, I have some plants specifically for them, well, it was for the bumblebees but I have seen some actual honey bees now.
They like the oldfashioned roses (the old ones with the not pretty flowers), the clover all through my lawn (husband wanted to do something about that, but hey...poor bees) and the fruit trees and the herbs.

I planted alyssum and bergamot for them too. Not that I like them but the bees do....
