| 1324208 | 2013-01-22 02:54:00 | Saw one in the garden yesterday in the Wairarapa. They spend years as an immature form underground, not hibernating. Interestingly, they feed on the xylem of the plant which is less nutritious than the phloem, thus it takes them years to mature. Different species have different years developing underground but there are usually some around each year. There is one species which spends 17 years underground. | user (1404) | ||

| 1324216 | 2013-01-23 01:14:00 | Bees, yes. I have a few, I have some plants specifically for them, well, it was for the bumblebees but I have seen some actual honey bees now. They like the oldfashioned roses (the old ones with the not pretty flowers), the clover all through my lawn (husband wanted to do something about that, but hey...poor bees) and the fruit trees and the herbs. I planted alyssum and bergamot for them too. Not that I like them but the bees do.... |
