1348644 2013-07-11 10:32:00 Hey just tonight I came across two problem the first one is my avast free edition blocked a site and when I open the results section ,Microsoft word gives me the results where before Internet explorer used to do that and just another problem a flash update was required but once again when clicked update it opens word 2007. The. Microsoft update were fine but this adobe and avast opened in word. So it adobe tells me to install java on Microsoft word and so that sounded funny to me cause never happened before ,hopefully chrome updates itself like it says chrome will update flash automically . So hope it makes sense ,I wondering why the result are opening in word . Does did malware check quick scan with avast and malware bytes -none detected ,will do full scan tommorrow and see ,hope that's not it . And will reset Internet explorer ,sometimes it gets stuck .any comments on what to do next . Thanks AppleFan (17097)
1348645 2013-07-11 10:54:00 Sounds like the file associations have gotten out of whack and word has taken over.

To fix it, a bit more info please -- What OS, as different OS's have different methods to reinstate.

1348646 2013-07-11 11:19:00 Hey os is windows 7 -64 . Pc is shut at moment so will work on it tommorrow ,wondering of what u said how can this happen . Thanks AppleFan (17097)
1348647 2013-07-11 21:10:00 Have a read of default-programs-set-programs-default-associations.html (www.sevenforums.com)

When you have the list open if you highlight the item Eg: Internet Explorer, down the bottom near the middle in small writing it will tell you how many of its defaults are currently set.

If you wanted individual restores to Windows defaults, theres a list along with the reg merges @ default-file-type-associations-restore.html (www.sevenforums.com)

Unfortunately The one thing Microsoft has never seem to have done is a one step "reset" of all windows defaults within the OS that's easy to find, it would be very useful instead of having to go through each one.

Hey thanks for this tutorials - now have browse through website , seems useful , so i have come across the website to a place where should i do this , just need to make sure i do the right thing - In the left column, select (highlight) a listed program that you want to change it's default file associations for . And a screeshot does pop up showing me exactly what should be done , so should i do that . And yes I there is 'Set this Program as Default " . Underneath it says Use the Selected program to open all files and protocols it can open by default . So before i proceed , just need a final checkup . I doing full malware scan just after i write this post . I do have a question for you , if i use chrome as my daily browser , should i select that in default programs than internet explorer . Thanks .

1348650 2013-07-12 09:10:00 Personally I'd set IE as default browser first, this is because IE is linked to several other programs and functions rely on IE to operate. Setting IE as default can change other actions within windows. Once IE is set as the default browser, check that it opens OK, then if you want to set Chrome as the default there shouldn't be a problem.

re the previous comment "Unfortunately The one thing Microsoft has never seem to have done is a one step "reset" of all windows defaults " I've found a batch file someone made a couple of years ago which is meant to do exactly that.

I will test it first on a Workshop PC to see what happens, good bad or in-different :) - if it screws the workshop PC, thats no big deal, as it only takes 6 minutes to put the OS back in again. Once done I'll post back what happened and if its nothing bad I'll also post the content of the batch file with instructions on how to make/use it. I WONT post anything like this (bat File) with out trying it first. ( Tomorrow).
