tried another power adapter (works) - nothing
pulled the battery & hdd - held power button down for 30 sec
replaced hdd - tried to power up (without the battery in) - nothing no lights - nothing

is the unit dead?
I would assume some power part of the mb is faulty?

1348494 2013-07-10 06:26:00 Never assume anything :D

Depending on how the power Jack is attached, if its the same as the one shown in post #20 on This Site Here (www.irisvista.com), it could simply be a faulty Power Jack, and the motherboard is OK. That model is a toshiba L675D But yours may be the same layout. They come in two versions, either a separate jack that plugs in, or soldered to the motherboard.

Actually got a Acer laptop last week, same thing, dead as a dodo bird - the jack had failed. Plug in a new jack and away it goes again.

Edited: according to This strip down Video (www.laptopinventory.com) the board has a separate power jack and doesn't look like its soldered to the board.

Darn good idea not soldering the power socket to the mobo.

I would assume so as well (sorta)
Most of the dead lappies I see have motherboard faults (confirmed). Usually repairable fortunately.
