| 1348101 | 2013-07-06 05:03:00 | I currently have a Compaq CQ57-307TU that. Have been using for internet and emails nothing more. At the moment it has 2GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive installed. Have been thinking about replacing the 500 GB hard drive with an SSD and putting the maximum amount of ram in. Would this be a good idea or should I just buy a new laptop? |

Anything slowing it down that you wanna resolute? I have a old laptop maybe least 5yrs used . I have 4GB Ram and I only use it for the Interrnet and FB, less emails now, even non geek friends get me to install IM apps on my phone . . . If I was going to need a full size device I might go for a tablet but I'm content with my phone . |

If you go into task manager then performance are you low in ram? Or are you just after a faster computer just because. I have 4gb in my 4yr pc for photography but when normal stuff i have least 2gb spare, for me ram wont help need a cpu for that. Also if not current tech the ram may be on the pricier side. |

| 1348105 | 2013-07-06 08:47:00 | I did a reset to factory settings several months ago and it takes forever to boot up. It was done using the recovery partition on the hard drive. Could it be all of the ruubish that comes intalled on it from the factory? Would a complete format of the hard drive including the recovery parttion be of any use? Not after faster computer just better loading times. |

| 1348106 | 2013-07-06 10:37:00 | My 2c :) When you right click the bottom task bar and go into task manager and then performance, how much memory do you have spare and what's the tax on the CPU? The Compaq CQ57-307TU has a 1.5Ghz Celeron chip. I would factory set the HD and see how you go but I won't put anymore money into it. You are far better off spending $500-700 on a new laptop. Even if you did the RAM won't be cheap on older machines and the SSD would not be cheap either. SSD from what I have read does increase boot times, applications loading yes but it's like spending money into a 15yr old car. But you shouldn't spend money on a SSD for every day stuff. It's like putting a turbo charger on a 15yr old Mazda 323. Save the money and get a new modest laptop with a standard HDD. Failing the above another option could be downgrade it to Windows XP or install a fresh copy of Windows 7 if you have and just install the drivers and minimal else without all that bloat. |

The last option seems to be the best one. Can I use a Windows 7 OEM disc and use the Windows COA on the laptop to do a clean reinstall? |

I've never used done that way, someone should advise you on that :) I won't spend anymore money into it. For some comparison, Similar to yours, I am running 32bit Windows 7 too on this laptop I bought used, it's not a Celeron but a Dual Core 1.80Ghz, prob a good 5yrs used. It came with 4GB, 32bit recognises only 3GB, I have 1.8GB free. So it is using 1.2GB. It's fine, I only use it for the web while in the tv room, won't get another, when it crashes, may just get a tablet should I need that or I'll just pass on it. Should you upgrade the RAM 2 - 4GB you may only get 1GB extra with 32bit Windows. |

| 1348110 | 2013-07-06 11:15:00 | Its 64bit Windows 7 I have installed Ok, I thought it came with 32bit, Windows 7 Home right ... but it won't be cheap to get that 2GB module. I won't spend more on that laptop. Try the fresh install, if that doesn't help nothing will with that system, or downgrade to XP. |
