181971 2003-10-10 08:32:00 Major hassles in getting a Nokia Ni500 ADSL modem/router to connect to the internet . If you are familiar with this modem then you know that the install program on the CD doesn't run in Windows XP so I have to manually configure the modem through Hyperterminal .

I can set up the modem to communicate with my PC, but the modem cannot connect to the ISP's (Orcon) server . I also get the odd error when setting up the modem's configuration, which I have copied here:

i500> Modem Init Failure : Spurious ATU Detected (25)

i500> ip nat add ppp_deip: enable - device out of order - ppp_device

device ppp_device ether //ppp/device=1 mtu 1500 <unknown> # FAILED

I've called Helpdesk at my ISP but none of the people I've spoken to are able to help me with the problems . My LAN connection is correctly configured with the correct IP addresses and I've gone through the modem's User Guide over and over . I'm certain I've followed the setup to the letter, but no joy . Meanwhile, my Jetstart connection is burning a hole in my pocket as it lies idle and unused :(

Would like to hear from anyone who has had similar problems to mine with their Ni500 modem and has managed to get their's successfully configured and running .

FYI, here's the setup of my ADSL line: phone filter in the phonejack, with a 4-wire phone line extension cable (7-metres) connected at one end to the ADSL port of the filter and the other end connected to the modem . The extension cable has RJ-12 connectors at both ends, and one end connects to the modem's RJ-11 jack . Would the 4-wire RJ-12 connector be a problem, since the modem came supplied with a 2-wire RJ-11 cable?

181972 2003-10-10 08:46:00 The 4-wire RJ-12 shouldn't be the problem - it'll just use the 2 wires it has and leave the other 2 alone for some other day...
Instead of having to try configuring everything by HyperTerminal which is about as much fun as trying to configure it by Telnet (well I find it fun, but then again that's because I enjoy the hassle of it :-p), why not use the WebBased interface? Surely you have a spare Network Port on your machine if it's reasonably new - just jump down to DSE and spend ~$15 on a RJ-45 Crossover Ethernet Cable and that'll do it sweetly. You will have to change your WinXP IP Addy for the network (unless it's not set up yet) so that it matches the range used on the router...

181974 2003-10-10 09:40:00 ok found it so i will post here but email me if you have any problems.

click on start>run
type telnet 192.168.7.1 then click ok,
type i500 press enter
type ppp 1 welogin yourusername password press enter
type config save press enter
type restart
Modem will reset itself and the lights will come back again.
**note that the username must be the format supplied by your ISP for example mine is username.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

Now...........

you have to configure your tcp/ip settings

double click network icons on bottom right task bar
click on properties
highlight internet protocol (tcp/ip) click on properties
click on use the following IP address
ip address = 192.168.7.2
subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.7.1

In the DNS settings I had mine set to Xtra but I dont know what the settings are for Orcon.

my example is

preferred DNS server 202.27.184.3
alternate DNS server 202.27.184.5

I also have the instructions how to connect to jetstreamgames so you can download from there at full speed.

Same steps as before but you need to replace yourusername with user@jetstreamgames.co.nz password

**password here can be anything at all, but i think 6 characters long

and then change the preferred DNS to 203.96.91.1

hope this helps
let me know if you have any probs

cheers

181975 2003-10-10 11:16:00 Guys, thanks for the quick replies . Sam, those commands you've posted are the same commands I've been entering as outlined in the modem's user guide . Still can't establish a connection to the internet . If you can remember back to when you first set up your Ni500, did you follow the manual's instructions for enabling RFC 2364 and did it work for you straight away?

I've been following the instructions in the manual and am getting no joy . The TCP/IP addresses are the correct ones . I'm at a loss as to why I cannot connect when I seem to be following the correct procedures .

181976 2003-10-10 17:18:00 I did nothing at all with RFC 2364 (I have no idea what that means). When I first had Jetstart I was on ME so the CD worked. When I changed to XP I had no idea how to connect so I was reserved to ring Nokia Support 0900 34357 and they took me through the steps that I have posted here. I have since reinstalled XP and when I do I just follow the same steps.

The reason why I no longer use Ni500 is because I am on my THIRD one now., thankfully all under warranty. The first one kept disconnecting every hour or so after 6 months use. The 2nd did the same thing after 10 months of use. They have replaced that but it is still brand new unused as I decided to go and buy a different brand which I am having no problems.

Was yours new? Maybe you need to 'refresh' it back to factory settings (dont ask me how) as I never made any changes to the setup that I have outlined above or maybe it is a dud.

good luck

sam m

ps - any chance you are in hamilton? I could try my new one here if you are.

181977 2003-10-11 01:32:00 I simply used a 98 windows ME machine and configured it that way with the cd. Once it is configured all you have to do is change the gateway address on your XP machine to that of the router and enter the DNS address of orcon and it should work fine. There was a know issue with the Ni500 in that they would overheat and disconnect. I tried 2 or them and then I got rid of them and bought the dynalink RTA210. Odin (227)
181978 2003-10-11 06:48:00 Actually I have been trying to set up the modem using a Windows 98 machine, and then switching it back onto my Win XP PC . Still no luck . I've been in contact with Orcon's helpdesk again . Apparently, according to the helpdesk I have been logging on to their server, but the modem is not receiving or sending data . I'm sure the modem is fine to use, there must be a config setting that needs to be looked at . One thing I've noticed about manually configuring the modem is that there is no mention in the user guide about entering the Operating Mode or the Framing settings . Telecom mentions that these two settings must be adjusted, but I can't find any way to access these particular settings .

Sam, thanks for the offer, but I live in Auckland . I think I'll try configuring the modem again in Windows 98 .

181979 2003-10-11 07:17:00 I can't remember much about the particular modem, pity it doesn't have a web-interface as this is always the easiest way to do them .

Also, try manually setting the other settings as well as the username and password settings:

PPP over ATM
G . DMT
VPI: 0 VCI: 100

Another possibility is that you have a different ISP plan than what you have subscribed on your phone line .

If you've got Jetstart provisioned on your phoneline, and Jetstream at your ISP then you won't be able to connect and vice versa .

Also try the Jetstream games realm and see if you can get to their web-site etc .

From memory you just use:

Username: user@jetstreamgames . co . nz
Pass: leave it blank

Try to visit www . jetstreamgames . co . nz and download some data from here, this will also require the above network settings to be correct also .

181980 2003-10-11 07:53:00 I've followed the modem's user guide on setting up for PPPoA, but there is NO mention of how to enter the setting for G.DMT nor for Framing. I'm almost convinced that somehow one or both of these settings may need to be changed, but the manual doesn't mention either or how to change them. There must be someone out there with a Nokia Ni500 running Windows XP who has managed to successfully get their modem up and running. xmojo1 (4630)
