181935 2003-10-10 08:08:00 Can't be bothered reading all those specfications, but it's better than CRN's computer of the year at a glance (although their one was done in March). agent (30)
181936 2003-10-10 08:49:00 But when you all got your 286s, was there not a lot of heavy breathing ??This year's ultimate with be next years has-been. Digital lust......... TonyF (246)
181937 2003-10-10 08:54:00 I done some heavy breathing when i purches my Amiga 15 odd years ago....

Was most upset after returning from Aussie a couple years ago to find my father had thrown it out during my 5 year absence.

181938 2003-10-10 09:23:00 Wizzy-do, yes...
BUT the modem is still only 56k - must be intended for the NZ Telecom based network ...

and with more and more bloated websites using such unnecesssaries as Macromedia flash these are obviously NOT intended for anything but BASIC Internet use, one would think.....

Shame the internet speed thing hasn't really improved at the same magnitude that hardware has ... eg: cpu, FSB, HDD density, etc

181939 2003-10-10 10:57:00 The modem limitation of 56k is forced by the physical limitation of phone lines .
Its a global issue, NZ is no different to any other country in this respect .

When you consider that the phone lines are designed for voice traffic between 300 Hz and 3000 Hz, then a maximum raw data rate of 56,000 bits per second is simply amazing .

One Hz corresponds to 2 bits per second in a simplistic view, so the lines are designed for 6,000 bps .

If you want to install high speed phonelines, why bother . Use ADSL over the existing ones .

So yes, we have high speed internet .

Why not put an ADSL modem in such a high spec machine?
Because no right thinking person would consider an internal ADSL modem, they would use an external router .

181940 2003-10-10 11:03:00 Didnt one of the dream machines reviewed by PCWorld a couple months ago feature an internal asdl modem?....I thought it a strange move at the time and i do believe the reviewer stated they would have preferred to see a faster harddrive instead. metla (154)
181941 2003-10-10 12:29:00 It is a nice PC but can you actually get 3.8Ghz P4 chips yet?? I think you would have to pre-order that PC and wait till the technology arrives - I think it states that on the website somewhere.

Have you seen the PUram, that is definitely the best feature there, but who the heck has $5000us to buy one? The technology rules though, I would love a speedy 'hard drive' like that.

If you got everything you wanted on there that was cool, you are looking at like $16,000us. I did a little calculations including all the cool stuff. I still reckon you could buy three - four dual Xeon 3.06Ghz computers and cluster network them for the same price (18-24Ghz+). Fire in some Quadro FX's and loads of ram, and I reckon you could simulate nuclear explosions. :)
