181991 2003-10-14 04:47:00 Hi

I'm using Ni500 and agree with Billy that it is a reliable router although the original (blue case) gave a fair bit of disconnections (over-heating) but after they have replaced me with this black casing, it has been so far so good.

I used Windows 2000 to set up the router (with the setup CD) then just plug it to my Xp and it works beautifully.

Cheers & good luck

181992 2003-10-14 13:23:00 I too used the Ni500 (still have the install cd here) as well and apart from the overheating issue it worked fine. the main reason I moved on to the Dynalink RTA 220 was so I could enable pinholes for games and other programs.

If the modem AND you network have been configured correctly then it should work. I'd do what that poster said two posts back ;-)

Just noticed the above while reviewing the history of your problem . It is not the cause of your communication difficulties, but I would 86 the 7 metre extension as it is unlikely to present the same impedance/attenuation to the HF adsl signal as a normal telephone cable .

Those extensions usually have multi-strand conductors and are not likely to be providing twisted pairs . It would be better to use Cat5 cable from your existing telephone outlet to an extra outlet installed close to your computer and use a short lead from there to your router . The filter can stay where it is because it is the telephone that is filtered, not the adsl line .

The absolute ideal setup is an inline filter hardwired at the first termination point for your incoming line and a dedicated Cat5 line from there to your computer . All other outlets in the house will then work for phones without any additional filters required .

Best to get it working first though before you try to optimise results . :D

Incidentally, have you checked out the Nokia troubleshooting guide ( . xtra . co . nz/help/0,,4155-2219305,00 . html" target="_blank">www . xtra . co . nz) provided by Xtra . It is quite comprehensive and very easy to follow .

I still think you need to get your router back to its default settings and restart from there .

Cheers

181994 2003-10-14 21:39:00 I'm going to borrow a different modem from a workmate of my wife's workplace and set that up . If that works then the problem must lie with the Nokia or its configuration . I tried to set up the Nokia in a Win98 PC and still can't connect through the Win98 PC .

Billy T, you are right in that my phone line setup is not ideal; I'll try and get the connection working properly before I address the phone line setup . Regarding the Nokia troubleshooting guide you linked to, nothing new there that I haven't tried . My username/password appear to authenticate because I get the Open for IP message . The trouble is here:

i500> ip devices
# type dev file IP address
device ethernet ether //edd mtu 1500 192 . 168 . 7 . 1
device ppp_device ether //ppp/DEVICE=1 mtu 1500 210 . 86 . 58 . 80

especially that last part after DEVICE=1 . My modem never reports the public IP address . It always comes up with a #FAILED message when reporting the public IP address .

There is no easy way to reset the Nokia back to its default factory setting . There is no reset pinhole (that I can find) so I have to manually remove all protocols before configuring the modem for PPPoA . Have done that numerous times . The result is always the same: when the modem contacts the ISP's server, it logs in my username/password okay, but cannot connect to the DNS server . Looking at my usage chart on my Orcon account, I am being assigned public IP addresses, but the modem doesn't seem able to recognise the IP addresses . I'll keep you all informed on how the borrowed modem goes .

181995 2003-10-14 21:50:00 Probably you have to ring up Nokia's helpdesk and ask them how to reset the router to its default settings. I think you have changed too many configurations (by accident?) settings already. Resetting to its default configuration maybe is the first step in trouble shoot your problem. bk T (215)
181996 2003-10-15 12:30:00 OK, the latest: the Nokia modem works! I don't know how or why or what, but I was fiddling with the modem config yet again . Even opened up the modem case to check the inside . Played around with the LAN settings . I was futilely pinging my ISP's DNS server yet again and on a whim decided to ping Jetstream games' server - and got a reply! I then pinged Microsoft's website and got a reply back . I held my breath as I pinged my ISP's DNS server and this time it worked!

Now I'm happily surfing the internet and the connection appears stable . I don't know if I did anything to make the modem work but it does now . You guys were right - Telecom was blowing smoke out of its arse when their people told me the Nokia wouldn't work on their exchange . I'd like to thank you guys for making me persevere with the Nokia, I was really near the end of my tether trying to make it work . Next time I have a PC problem, I'm coming to post here first :)

181997 2003-10-16 05:29:00 Telecom seem to have only a few things on their list of possible fixes.

1. Check Network Setting
2. Clear out your Cache
3. Um er Um try installing again
4. no go then your modem is incompatable with the exchange, go buy a new modem that works. :D

Most people here will be only too happy to help you should you have any other problems, if they can. After most of us have gone through similar things and the best way to learn is to ask those that have been through it before. Just remember to passon what you learn as well. Glad you're up and running now, now phone up telecom and abuse the heck out of them (Kidding, they might disconnect you if you complain too much :D )
