182357 2003-10-11 23:28:00 Hi,

Spent a good 40 minutes on the phone with Paradise and TelstraClear, neither of whom it seems knows anything about their services - I've been shuttled all over the place, and have finally deduced that the cost of 256k/10GB (using 1/10th for nat. traffic), with a phone line would cost $86.95/month.

So long as everything works fine and I don't need to brave calling the help desk I think it's a pretty good deal.

You know it says on Paradise.net's website that it costs $66.95/month, yet TelstraClear (who say they are in charge of paradise) quote $76.95.

You think they'd get these things right.

Unfortunately, cable is dictated by where you live to a HUGE extent, and they outright refuse to install cable in apartments, or any multi-dwelling buildings.

To think free cable is available to everyone in Taipei.... :P (and probably not capped at 256k either!)

If we were to be in a place which is not wired for TelstraClear, then we would need to pay $30 for phone, plus the rate for DSL.

Orcon has a pretty good deal of 128k with 5GB International, and unlimited national for $50 Incl. Telecom's fees.

$60 seems to be the cheapest anywhere for a 256k connection.

So $90 on 256/128k ADSL including phone, or $87 on 256/128k Cable including phone.

The only other thing in favour of cable is that many ADSL providers threaten limited speed on p2p networks, as well as a number of other protocols. I couldn't find any mention of such tampering with the Cable deal, but I think I'll ask....

Thanks for your help guys!

Erin

182358 2003-10-12 00:04:00 Cable you get a fixed IP and they promote the use of servers. -=JM=- (16)
182359 2003-10-12 20:11:00 "Slingshot" hmm if there new jetstart is anything like there dial up was then i wouldnt even bother to give them the time of day, something along the lines of you get what you pay for and you dont get much quality with slingshot.

As for Maxnet and some others if you read more carefully into there contracts if says that it will limit game connections and ftp and pretty much anything else you want to use the internet for, so they may have higher caps but thats because you will never actually reach the cap.

AH i feel so much better :)

Ah yes, well said. Include Quicksilver in that too. I'm not sure, does Orcon do that as well?

If you do get ADSL, have a look here (dr-mission-series.7p.com) for the best Isps
