182062 2003-10-11 18:38:00 The computer has been put in a way that the lead has put upward pressure on the socket. Now the socket feels very loose and the plug just falls out if you move it. If you hold it the right way it does work but it is very unreliable kerryg (4512)
182063 2003-10-11 19:02:00 you could try bending the end of a hairclip (or tough piece of wire) and with a magnifying glass, try to hook the contacts to sit out a little more, inside the hole...?
just thinking of a cheap quick option...or has the plastic ring broken?

182064 2003-10-11 19:46:00 Thanks for this. The plastic ring is still intact but the whole connector feels like it is loose. It is possible that the botherboard is cracked where it is attached. If I could only get it out of the case I could probably deal to it kerryg (4512)
182065 2003-10-11 20:07:00 I'm sorry I've never had a laptop apart before, but since it went together I'm sure it can be done...!
after you took all the screws out do you think there were those little plastic lips holding the top to the bottom?

or perhaps someone with experience of this, could make a suggestion...?

182066 2003-10-12 01:23:00 I have taken laptops apart. I have even reassembled them. :D

My suggestion is: DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS YOURSELF. At the moment you have a laptop which works, except for the sound. Unless you have experience, you could easily end up with an expensive plastic box which does not do anything.

A specialist laptop place will be able to non-destructively open the unit, and replace the socket. It shouldn't take more than half an hour or so, and shouldn't cost much. (I think they'll be happier if you put back any screws you have removed ... even though you didn't succeed in getting it open. :D )

I don't think you'll be able to "hook" the contacts out.

I will never deal with that company ever! We had about 100 HP Brio computers which were still under warranty. My collegue was instructed by HP to deal with them for warranty support. They would not send him the replacement part to fit and insisted that the PC be sent to them to have the work done. On completion of the work they turned around and said that the warranty only covered parts not labour and they would not return the PC until payment was received! Then they would not accept a purchase order from us, but would only accept cheque or credit card!

some people can and some can't.
I suppose a can opener is out of the question...?
