181981 2003-10-11 08:14:00 It should be OS independent. The WXP part of it has nothing to do with it, it should work on Linux, Mac, anything.

Did you try the Jetstreamgames login?

Does the manual mention anything about setting it to factory defaults? If you can do this it should just be a matter of loading the user and pass and it should go.

OK I've had enough ;) lol,

I reluctantly unplugged my (so easy to use) Alcatel router and have got my Nokia out of the box to see what was going on . I am now surfing via Nokia Ni500 on XP Pro, configured via telnet as I outlined above . I followed it exactly as I said and no problems at all .

I never touched anything else . I would suggest trying to get the unit back to factory settings and starting afresh as mine was brand new unused (until now) .

I am using Xtra Jetstart .

email me or we can hook up via msn if you want (same username as email)

Just reading the manual and have entered ip config and according to page 44 (blue covered manual) my settings are identical (apart from IP addresses) so I do have RFC 2364 enabled but that must have been a factory default .

181984 2003-10-12 02:47:00 Actually forget that.
I just had another read of manual and it says that the factory setting is RFC 1483.

181985 2003-10-12 08:41:00 I'm following the user's guide's instructions to the letter about setting up for PPPoA (RFC 2364) . I've contacted Orcon's helpdesk many times and they all say that I can log on to their server but for some reason the Nokia modem doesn't receive or send data . When I try to ping Orcon's DNS server I get the 'destination unreachable' message . A guy I contacted suggested that I am actually not logging on to the DNS servers . This is all confusing .

Question for Sam: when you configured your Nokia, did you enter Operating Mode and Framing settings? According to Telecom and Orcon, the Operating Mode setting should read G . DMT and the Framing setting should be set to VCMUX . There's no mention of these settings in the manual for the Ni500 . Do you think you can save your telnet session and email me a copy of it so I can see exactly how you are configuring your modem? Webmail address is klynt_estwood6@yahoo . com

181986 2003-10-12 09:11:00 I have sent email with screenshot.

I have no idea what PPPoA or RFC 2364 are so obviously I did not change anything with these settings. Why are you playing with these settings anyway? Like I said as of today mine was brand new and according to the manual the default setting is RFC 1483. I would be inclined to follow the instructions to set it back to RFC 1483 then follow the steps via telnet that I provided earlier.

Also I have no idea what G.DMT or Frame setting or VCMUX? so again I did not have to set anything here.

I am still surfing via Nokia and even had a bit of a play on jetstreamgames d/loading at 250Kb/s is simply beautiful.

181987 2003-10-13 07:15:00 OK, I think the problem has been identified . I spoke to my ISP's helpdesk again, and the guy contacted Telecom's helpdesk . Basically, my problem is due to . . . . . . . . modem incompatibility with Telecom's exchange . He says it is most likely the exchange I'm hooked up to has upgraded equipment . Sam, it could be your exchange has older equipment which is compatible with your Nokia, but if Telecom upgrades your exchange your Nokia will be rendered useless .

Not the news I wanted to hear, but at least I have a definite answer now and I can move on . Thanks for all the help .

181988 2003-10-13 11:56:00 What a load of bull. That seems to be a standard telecom excuse. Ive had that same excuse on several occations and it was utter crap. For a start you are using Jetstream NOT a dial up there should be NO incompatibility issues with the exchange. 2ndly the Nokia Ni500 is the very modem recommended by Telcom and Xtra it says so on the Box (well it did on mine) and also says it on their website.

Telecom are trying to pull the wool over your eyes because they don't know the answer themselves or can't be bothered doing anything about it. I suggest you contact Nokia and ask them if it is at all possible for their adsl modem to be Incompatable with an ADSL enable exchange, because I don't think it is possible since all adsl modems use the same protocols.

181989 2003-10-13 22:07:00 I agree with Odin, although I do recall another brand of adsl modem (not Nokia though) that did have a problem with ADSL here in NZ but it was not exchange specific. I would ring the "0900 ehelp" and ask them what they think (if you havent already). I think either Orcon or Telecom have given you the "spend more money so we dont have to try too hard to help you" spiel. Is there anyone you know in your area running ADSL with XP. Ask them if you can setup there, just to prove in your own mind that you werent being fobbed off.

good luck

181990 2003-10-13 23:05:00 Okay, I don't know if this will help but here goes:

1) The Nokia Ni500 does not install driver software on the host computer, and it operates independenty of the software platform .

2) There is zilch setting up to do when using the CD, just your logon and password .

3) Setting up on a W98 PC will set it up for XP

4) Provided you have the correct settings on your network card (IP address, subnet mask & gateway) then communication is assured . Don't forget to insert your ISP's DNS addresses though .

5) If you have been telneting etc I would try to reset the router to its default settings then allow it to be configured on a W98 PC using the CD . After that it should work OK, just make sure you get a working connection of the w98 PC before you remove it anc connect to the XP machine .

6) More is less, all things are simple, so returning to go will quickly establish whether or not you have a faulty router .

7) The Ni500 is very reliable, even the older (blue) version provided you don't impede the free flow of air around it . Standing it up on end will help . The later (recased) grey version with the tranparent front is OK .

8) I originally set up my Ni500 on W98 and have since added four W2K machines to the network with nothing more than a setup of the TCP/IP properties on each machine . I also use Netbui protocol on my network but that has nothing to do with internet access .

Cheers
