181891 2003-10-10 08:00:00 Don't know if that comment about a 486 was directed at me, but if it was, the 233MHz machine I've got is actually a Cyrix processor, and I have a dialup connection (and with the amount of bandwidth we go through each month it wouldn't be worth getting Jetstream or Jetstart - eg, the school holidays just gone, I took our usage for September up to ~12000 minutes [200 hours], and I only used that account for one week out of the two - the other week was largely spent sleeping and offline). agent (30)

You don't pay anything for games traffic provided you log on to Telecom/Xtra's gaming service .

If only you could approach the internet via that logon then divert off to other sites all would be sweet but you can bet Telecom have that option tied up tighter than a bull's bum in the fly season .

While local caching of downloads would be nice, the hardware and admin time & expense to set that up would be prohibitive for me, I don't know enough about that aspect of computing and the learning curve is not attractive .

I am well protected in other respects as my network hides behind a Nat router and well configured ZoneAlarm . I retain full administrator control over all users access rights and nobody but me can change ZA's configuration .

Cheers

That is if you are on Jetstreem starter but to what I read you do pay (in other words if you play a games on this new 256K plan’s then that data get added to your account as used bandwidth)(Hope that makes sense…)

181894 2003-10-10 23:54:00 Telecom have changed the website, and while there is still a page about using Jetstream Games site, its no longer referred from the Jetstream pages in the new pricing options .

Note that its Xtra Jetstream now (not Telecom Jetstream) .

Its not that the Jetstrem Games site is not available, its just that they are silent on it .

If the provision of ADSL is soon to be opened up to others over Telecom's network, there may be little incentive or the to offer the Games server?

Feel free to draw your own conclusions .

Not necessarily Stu. I believe if you log in properly to JSG through your router/modem (instead of using your normal login stu@orcon.co.nz) then you won't be charged for traffic. JSGames is free for all telecom adsl customers.

But what else can I say, if you opted for a pathetic 500mb plan, then expect your stress levels to increase by monitoring the traffic all the time to stay under the limit. I have far better things to be doing with my time than watching my adsl traffic like a hawk. :p

Just to clarify

On JS Starter - your local traffic is unlimited but that restrict me to playing on NZ servers and on 128kbps. If I play on overseas servers (eg Australia) those traffic will count towards my 5GB per month limit.

On JS full speed - your traffic is counted whether it is local or international.

On both JS Starter and JS Full speed - you can logon to the Jetstreamgames.co.nz free realm. You get full DSL speed and all traffic is free. But you only get to play on certain servers hosted by various ISP ie Xtra (and Paradise?). You cannot host your own games (others can't connect to your server). The servers I play on are XTRA's Battlefield1942 and XTRA's Americas Army. The others are Counter Strike and Half Life etc.

So the trick is to play on JetStreamgames.co.nz login as much as possible and surf/email on your ISP account.

That is ISP dependent . Some ISP's don't differentiate and all traffic counts towards your total usage .

Some only count international towards the cap .

Others still (Paradise) count international at normal rates, and national traffic also, but at a lower amount . Something along the lines of 10MB of national counts as 1MB off your international cap .

And some just plain don't have a cap at all .
