182346 2003-10-11 08:37:00 Hi all,

I will be moving to Chch next year, in a flat with 5 others, all of whom are keen to get a decent broadband plan.

What with the embarrassing data caps in New Zealand, 'real' broadband will be out of the question, so probably we will be looking at some variant of Jetstart.

I know of plans which allow 10GB international, unlimited national. This is roughly what we are after. We would also be interested in bundling a phone deal with it if it's good value.

What can you recommend as a good deal for something along these lines, available in central Christchurch. We would either be in the CBD, or within a few blocks of it.

Basically the idea is to have plenty of national traffic for downloading MP3 and so on, with enough national traffic to keep us out of trouble (probably a couple of GB is fine), and at a good speed, at a max. of $100/month. Bundled phone is cool.

Thanks for your help!

Erin

The best you will get out of JetStarter Starters ( JetStart) is 20KB/s that is on a 128 K connection

You can get 15 GB international cap from orcon (http://orcon.net.nz )

For ISP which support JetStream:
Have a look at here www.netguide.co.nz

&
here: www.telecom.co.nz

I am with Quicksilver (on JetStream Starter): http://www.quicksilver.co.nz there are not to bad at all & I have a 10 GB international cap

JETSTREAM Starter (128 k capped rate)

Telecom Charge per month including GST: $29.95

QUICKSILVER charge, per month, including GST: $34.95

Free Data Volume per month: -Unlimited National Traffic
-10 GB limit International.

Price per extra Mb (including GST): 10c per MB excess international traffic

Total Monthly Cost excluding Telephone rental: $64.90

**sorry about the formating :8} **

182348 2003-10-11 09:20:00 Hi Erin

Since you will be looking at living in central Christchurch, have you considered cable which should be available in that area instead of Jetstart?

182349 2003-10-11 09:35:00 I know nothing about it other than Christchurch has cable as competition with Telecom. Not sure who runs it but it could be worth looking into. Fire-and-Ice (3910)
182350 2003-10-11 09:38:00 I have gone and hunted out some more details for you:

Paradise High Speed Starter*

* $59.95 per month + $17 per month for your Cable Modem rental
* 256kbps downstream / 128kbps upstream
* 10GB of international monthly traffic
* 20c per additional international MB
* 2c per additional national MB
* up to 6 email addresses
* access to paradise.net's helpdesk support, 24 hours, 7 days a week

They also offer a bundled telephone deal with TelstraClear:

Telephone rental + High Speed Start (256kbps + 10 gigs) = $69.95 + modem rental per month (cost $17)

182351 2003-10-11 09:42:00 Slingshot jetstart with NO CAP. Pheonix (280)
182352 2003-10-11 10:22:00 Although it has no cap, there is a clause in the contract saying that they can cancel your account if you use whatever amount they deem to be "more than enough" for you. I would think that this would be somewhere around 10gb. segfault (655)
182353 2003-10-11 10:39:00 Try ICONZ for Unlimited 128kbps JetStream Starter, and AFAIK, MaxNet do the same. Im not sure if MaxNet is nationwide, but I'm pretty sure ICONZ are in Chch :-)

I know a guy who does over 40 gigs a month with ICONZ!

182355 2003-10-11 10:53:00 I'd be SERIOUSLY looking at 256kbps/5GB (might be 10GB now?) with Paradise/Saturn/Telstra/Clear. I know people with it and love it. Just remember it will be VERY dependant on where your flat is. -=JM=- (16)
