182711 2003-10-13 00:05:00 Hi,
An idle question no doubt,
I have two H/d in my computer - one of 14.3 gb and the other of 4 gb - which incidently was my first, running Win 98SE.
I use this for paintshop Pro and Photoshop Pro v7- using a lot of space, but available when I need them .
My 14 gb runs XP and as such with a 500Mhz CPU - I keep everything out of it that I can.
For two years I had used 2.2 gb of the 4gb and had approximately 1.7 gb free space available.
Last week I checked the amount of space and horror of horrors, I was down to 900mb-- Why? when nothing was "fresh" installed to consume that,
I cleared out temp files and regained 100 mb to 1.1, give or take.
Why would this suddenly happen and where would I look to clear out the unasked for usuage?

182712 2003-10-13 00:53:00 Right-click each folder in turn, and select Properties

This will tell you how many files and the total size, in each folder.

That way you can first identify where the space has gone, then find the reason.

182713 2003-10-13 01:48:00 XP like winME has a restore feature. Each time you load a device or a driver etc it can create a restore point. this can chew through your hd space. While XP restore does actually do what its told (unlike winME) if you tell it to only use 200 megs then thats all it will use. I sugest turning off the restore feature, restart and then then it back on. This will clear all the restore points and give you some hard drive space back. Clearing you internet cache wiull aslo help.

When you said the you cleared your temp files did you do it by deleting the files in the Documents and settings/USERNAME/local settings (usually hidden, unhide to see)/Temp folder.

Once done then set your restore settings to a maximum amount say 200 or 300 megs.

182714 2003-10-13 19:51:00 Hi Godfasther,
as usual you speak with knowledge
In Win 98 SE I see a folder created 7 August with the title
66293ad3336d9a46e57c577ic775c721
literally - in lower case
By inference I can delete all of that - -- I have not created any folder in W98 for as long as I have had the other h/d with XP- so I doubt whether I will lose a thing -how or why this happened has to be related to the huge loss of space as quoted.
Can I do this en masse GF?- if so, a huge thank you once again

182715 2003-10-13 20:20:00 My memory of 98 is faded, but that has to be a system created folder.
Therefore don't rush into deleting it until you know whats in it

Right click each folder off C: and click on properties.
Post back with the folder names that have the larger sizes.

182716 2003-10-13 21:10:00 Hi
I have a similarly numbered folder which I did not create. Further enquiry showed that it was a Microsoft sevice pack detail, including a sub-folder containing an uninstall program. Scouse.

182717 2003-10-13 22:56:00 Hi effie, just a stab in the dark but check that xp hasn't created a pagefile on your 4gb drive. Search for a hidden file called pagefile.sys, it's usually around 500-600 mb's in size. If it's there you can go into advanced system properties and divert it to the other drive. pompeymike (4601)
182718 2003-10-13 23:56:00 First
Pompeymike- did a search - nothing- thanks anyway.
Second,
Godfather,
nearly all the files are either dll. files or things like clipboard - update and that ilk- almost as though it is a resume of what the whole program/win 98 has in it - that being so - has this ancient Windows merely created a folder that has all items in it- I certainly don't remember seeing that before. If it has, logically everything could be duplicated at the expense of h/d space, therefore deleteable. There are no updates support available with Microsoft update program, so it cannot be a recent download- there ain't any!.
Certainly there are no other " foreign/new" folders in that window- only such as Zone alarm set up, and other set up folders- Others, there, are "my documents, programs and so on-
as far as I can see the tally of lost space nearly equates to that which has been taken from me
O K GF tell me tell me
The amount of lost space is not critical, as I as said before, I only use that w 98 for specific purposes, while XP is now my favourite Windows.
BUT -" if it's there it has to work" - will I ever forget my vehicle inspection days!!!! ;-)

182719 2003-10-15 22:18:00 Hi Godfather,
sorry to drag up the past - I see I am down on page three and have not been told I CAN delete that huge file- see my last post re d.ll files etc
I would like to regain a bit of reserve- none of those files in that folder appear foreign, in realtion to their sudden appearance- and it would be embarressing if I did delete- as a shot in the dark- and have to re installW98 complete
Jusr say yay or nope-

182720 2003-10-16 02:07:00 There is no way I can answer that, as you have the files, and I can't see them .

What dates are on all the files? If any are recent, think twice?

Just change the name of the directory, and see if it all still works .

If it wont let you change anything then IT IS NEEDED as well .
