182610 2003-10-12 08:03:00 ocasionally i have had a few difficulties with my cd writer, and i have always put it down to operator trouble,

but it the past it has locked on me, unable to open..... dont actually remember how i got it open.... best not mention to many details i think.. and also it has not always copied my update work, pics or other items when i have been doing back ups, this seems to happen regularly... it refuses to copy it sometimes claiming not enough room on the disk when it is empty or when there is heaps of room anyway...

so i though how can i check this item to see if it is faulty or just basically operator probs.....
?

may not be possible but just not sure here,

182611 2003-10-12 08:34:00 Simplest way is to copy some files, and check them after you have.

Seeing if they are readable on the other PC would be a better way of checking as well.

If your CD writing software offers verification, use it. That reads the files after its copied them and compares them to the ones on the HDD
I use Nero, and it does it.

Do not use CD-RW.
They are too temperamental for backups (read your other thread) and CD-R are only 50c - 60c each now. Its not worth the saving to use CD-RW in my opinion.

182612 2003-10-12 09:04:00 im sorry Goddie ive not got this bit (CD-R or CD-RW )
can you explain a bit more again for me?

i have both it seems and when saving my data one cd was a cd-r while the other was cd-rw and they both havent got the info on them.

i did do some copying today and they seem to be all there,
but still can not account for the lost info from the other day.

182613 2003-10-12 09:15:00 CD-R is write once CDs that can be read on any CDROM drives .

CD-RW cost more, u can copy stuff on it, format it and repeat this for 100 times or so . Maybe 1,000 if I read that before . These can only be used on newer CD ROMs, vertially any available these days and u either need a software to be installed - the CD writing software or a small free download that lets u view such a format . CD RW can only be used as a floppy drive, u cannot make music CDs, photo CDs or duplicate CDs - u need CD R for this .

Also in Dos CD-R can only be used .

182614 2003-10-12 09:17:00 CD-RW are often temperamental. They are not as reliable as CD-R, and in my opinion there is no need to use them, given the cheapness of CD-R.

CD-RW work quite differently to CD-R, but there is no need to know those bits, if you don't have to use them, don't.

When you save data to a disk that already has data on it, sometimes all the "sessions" are only visible once the CD has been "finalised". I never "multisession" a CD so I have never met the problem.

Backups are worth 70c each time to me, and the ones in between the first and last version are often useful, when you need a copy of something before it was changed.

I am not familiar with the CD burner program you use, but someone will be able to tell you how to finalise the CD. I am sure the programs will be there.

182615 2003-10-12 09:19:00 CD-R can be used more than once to be correct but when u delete files u do not get the space back.

ie .. u can copy 100m b then 100mb til the CD fills up. if u closed the last session, u would need to open it then copy etc... each time u close and open it, it will consume more space on the cd.

182617 2003-10-12 09:42:00 I do believe then that you were perhaps setting up your CD to be burnt but not actually doing it in XP.

With Nero, you dont neccesarily need the wizard, as the defaults should do you fine for the most of it, but yeah...

Go with Nero and not Nero Express if you get the choice!

182618 2003-10-12 09:44:00 Sorry but XP's burn program is real basic and unreliable. I gave up on it and use Roxio easy CD creator, but Nero is just as good. just get one and learn it. Pheonix (280)
