182500 2003-10-12 01:12:00 My daughter and I have been battling with a network set-up between my Toshiba 2100CDS and a new desktop computer from PB Technologies (a modified [by PB Tech at my request] PB 502). Suffice to say that I’m now at a stage where both computers play well together over the LAN through the crossover Cat 5 cable, after we sorted all the problems with firewall settings – nightmare territory; who said networks were simple?

The Toshy runs Windows 98 and the PB 502 runs XP.

The only tiny problem is that both computers have a modem and both have a phone-line connection, so that either can dial up independently. This is so that when I take the laptop walkabout either computer can connect to the Internet.

The PB 502 works completely as required. If you hit the send/receive button on Outlook Express it calls up the dial-up panel and off you go. If you activate IE it too flicks the dial-up panel.

On the Toshy I have two symptoms (different to what it used to be before our networking foray): -

1) I now have an extra wee icon (two little screens) sitting at the extreme right of what I call the task bar (where it shows what programs are running) and if I rest the mouse pointer on it it says ‘Internet Gateway: Disconnected’. If I right-click on it it says ‘connect’ in black with a greyed-out ‘status sitting underneath it.

2) When I open IE it fails to flick up the dial-up panel and reports that it can’t find my default IP address.

However, if you open Outlook Express everything works as normal, and if you open IE when the connection to the ISP is live then IE is quite happy and will then work normally.

How can I get IE to stand on its’ own two feet and dial-up the ISP for itself, instead of being a wimp? How can I safely get rid of that annoying little icon, as I have enough cluttering up that right-most box area already?

Select "always dial" or "dial whenever a Network Connection is not present.

For the icon showing the network, you need to disable this from within you local area network connection settings. There will be a box to untick.
