183245 2003-10-14 17:44:00 Firstly Welcome to PF1

What Operating System are you using and what version of outlook express.

Please give us the maximum amount of information about your PC configuration when asking a question. It takes the guess work out replies and helps the person replying.

183246 2003-10-14 22:26:00 More information like which version of OE and what operating system you are running.

Although I won't tell you how to get the password, and it's not in plain text either, you should search google for your answer as my way is not suitable for this forum.

183247 2003-10-14 22:40:00 shaggy,

Try the Storage PassView utility available from Protected_Storage_PassView (http://nirsoft.cjb.net/)

"...Protected Storage PassView is a small utility that reveals the passwords stored on your computer by Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and MSN Explorer. The passwords are revealed by reading the information from the Protected Storage...

Download from the site (it is a small zip file) unzip to wherever you wish to store it... run it to reveal your passwords.
Cheers, Babe.

183248 2003-10-14 22:45:00 also note that you would probably get pws for other identities if there are any, so tell the people that own the other identities.... csinclair83 (200)
183249 2003-10-14 23:38:00 I think most programs you find like that are trial version and won't reveal the password, unless I'm mistaken, I don't think I've seen the program mentioned.

Although the answer is out there on the web, and I know I contributed to the answer as well and I can say it hasn't changed from Win95 onwards, although mine was only Outlook Express related, I needed to get my password back for an additional mailbox I asked for, and there's no means of changing the password to something I can easily remember, so whenever I forget it, I use my method.

Password Recovery for Outlook Express would be a good topic to research.

183250 2003-10-15 03:43:00 Even though what you're doing may appear innocent, it could be illegal. You would most likely be breaking the Licence Agreement for using OE, and possibly violating some kind of other law.

Is it absolutely essential to recover the password to your identity? Could you create a new one, and simply import the emails/folders into your new identity?

183251 2003-10-15 03:46:00 You can't get emails from another person's files even if you are that person. That's why the separate accounts are there, and are passworded. :D Graham L (2)
183252 2003-10-15 07:33:00 Thanks Babe Ruth! & to everyone else!

Thanks again!

183253 2003-10-16 04:17:00 I'd disagree. You can copy the actual files which store the emails to somewhere such as My Documents, and then import them into a new identity.

For example, the emails to my identity are stored in the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\[My user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D05FB9EE-E7CB-46A4-853B-EACB03AB754C}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

folder, where I can access the individual .dbx files such as Inbox.dbx etc. which contain all the emails which have been downloaded to my computer. You can then copy all these files to your My Documents folder, and import them into your new identity in Outlook Express (File-Import-Messages). I've done it before, but I think you have to have Administrator rights (for WinXP). I am using Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0, on WinXP.
