| 182924 | 2003-10-14 00:10:00 | Does anyone know of a good book on the basics of digital photography? Particularly interested in what camera to buy as there are so many different makes, models and prices. regards PP |

Consumer has just issued a comprehensive test on digital cameras. Go to the local library unless you know a member who has online access. Otherwise search the net for advice. The big suprise I had with digital is the shutter delay. Very frustrating and not intuitive. With a film camera you can snap a photo almost as fast as you can move your finger. Not so with digital. The camera has a think about it before it decides to take the picture. In the meantime that moment you glimpsed as you pressed the button has long gone. A major drawback in my humble opinion. |

| 182927 | 2003-10-14 03:36:00 | and the other thing is.. the more MP in the camera the more expensive it is... i have a 3.34mp and i think its pretty good quality... theres a few things you could do...go to the store and try each camera out that you want/suits your budget... and i am sure they would let you if they know you would make a purchase..or lure you into making one.. many librarys have online access to catalogue for free but to reserve books or anything like that you would need to log in.... my digital camera is pretty fast in shutter, i wanna time it..see how fast but it would be hard to do lol... good luck in your "perfect" camera search |

| 182928 | 2003-10-14 03:40:00 | We have a big feature coming in NZ PC World, Dec/Jan 2003. Covers what to look for when buying, tips on how to manage and improve images with software, how to get prints of your pics etc. | Biggles (121) | ||

Consumer found in their report that some cameras had a 2 second shutter delay (a long time) and the best had about half a second. Fuji Finepix I think. So if your HP is fast that is good to know. I agree that 3megapixel is about the minimum for quality. The rest of the rules for photography such as depth of field, aperture and shutter speed are the same for digital as for film. Happy snapping |

| 182931 | 2003-10-14 04:59:00 | When you buy a camera, look at features other than the pixel count as well. What batteries does it use? AA rechargeables are best and cheapest. You can use Alkalines if they go flat. Some speacilist batteries are $120 each if you want a spare. What memory cards does it use? Some are much cheaper than others, and its good to have spares. What sort of Zoom does it have? Do not attach any importance to "digital zoom". Only optical zoom is worth having. Does it do Macro? If you need close ups this is a good feature. Apart from that, its like asking people which car is best. I use a Fuji Finepix S602Z, and a Finepix MX2700 |

| 182932 | 2003-10-14 05:02:00 | Lots of advice here Percy. I wonder if you are any the wiser. You will need to give us your camera requirements & budget for any useful recommendations. It is a very wide subject, with very many options. The HP435 camera recommended above has very limited specs, but if your budget is also limited, better than nothing. As far as shutter delay is concerned, Winston may have been generalising. It is true for some digi cameras, but not all. I have had no trouble with the Fuji Finepix cameras. The best way Percy, is to check digital camera information, and reviews online at sites such as: www.steves-digicams.com |
