182799 2003-10-13 06:00:00 i am thinking of buying one, but i am not sure on the right price or good or bad manufacturers for adsl internal modems, can anyone gie me some pointers? DDDD (4314)
182800 2003-10-13 06:11:00 Only to strongly suggest that an external ADSL Ethernet NAT router gives you a hardware firewall, of significant use these days.

Thats at extra cost over an internal however.

You need to pay a lot of attention to software firewalls with an internal ADSL modem. If you are in a fringe area, the external ones (not USB) are more reliable.

If you plan on sharing the ADSL connection with other PCs the router is the way to go.

Or you could get an adsl internal modem & then use ICS (internet connection sharing) or use a proxy to share you Internet.

We are using an adsl internal modem & then use ICS to share the Internet to 3+ computers.

182802 2003-10-13 09:16:00 I set up my LAN with CNET gear (LAN cards and an 8 port switch) then added a Dynalink External router to the mix a few months later. Using the router, means that I have firewall and DHCP, so setting up the PC's was very easy. Just recently I added a wireless access point via the switch, after a few confusing hours, and some F1 help it all works through the Dynalink connection. Am pretty happy with it all, and have 3 PC's and a wireless Laptop running through it all. Harry_H (2985)
182803 2003-10-13 09:35:00 I have a Conexant internal ADSL modem from DSE. They are fairly well priced ($119) and they run very well. I've got mine inside a Linux gateway (which is doing firewalling, routing, etc) and I haven't had any problems with it.
