2003-10-14 05:46:00 | Hey all, not sure if anyone can think of a fix, but when i play a song in Windows MEdia Player 9, it chews up 100% resources. I know that WMP is a bit of a resource hog at times, but 100%?!?! and i get the obvious slow computer with 100% being used up. I have no visualisations going, the Equalizer isnt being used and no 'SRS WOW' settings are being used either. If anyone can suggest/comment/point out anything, please feel free Thanks in advance :) >> Richard

2003-10-14 08:30:00 | Hi, what are the specs of your machine - cpu size, memory, hard drive free space ? Maybe your machine just isn't up to it. If you look in the windows/system32 folder you'll find the old media player 'mplay32.exe', try using that to play your music and note the system resources. | pompeymike (4601) | |
2003-10-14 08:48:00 | Is WMP set to automatically rip CDs to Hard Disk? This will use lots of resources. Winamp is good at not eating up resources - although myself I take the path of least resistance and just use WMP... N

2003-10-14 10:09:00 | Depending on your OS, Id recommend you try removing it and sticking with 6.4. I wont use WMP9 on less than a 300Mhz coz it just chews up the system. WinAmp will run on a P75 fine however...! (Version 2.xx or 5)

2003-10-15 09:11:00 | im using XP home . . . never had the problem before, never heard of this problem before . WMPs not ripping CDs to the HDD, cos its only playing mp3s that are currently on the HDD anyway . Interesting Article: Workaround for Windows Media Player Bug Have you noticed that after installing the Windows Media Player bonus pack that processor utilization can go up to 100% between songs? This is a real pain because it causes all the other applications running on your computer to wait while the song change in the Windows Media Player . I realize that music is important, but not that important! But here's the fix . Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC . This brings up the Windows Task Manager . Click on the Processes tab . In the Processes tab, click on the Image Name column header . That will alphabetize the list of image names (an image is a program) . Find the image wmplayer . exe . Right click on wmplayer . exe, point to Set Priority, and click on Low . This will prevent the Windows Media Player from sucking up all your processor resources after you install the Windows Media Player bonus pack . when i do what this article says though, it still uses 100% resources, and you have to set it each time the WMP process starts . i uninstalled the bonus pack, but still having the same problem after rebooting . quite weird in my opinion

Windows media player will always eat up your resources, its designed to so that it forces you to upgrade your computer again (MS in cahoots with ram chip and cpu manufacturers). ;) | PoWa (203) | ||
2003-10-15 18:33:00 | yes, agreed its a resource hog, but if it was an OS problem i would have had it before now :P i used to use winamp but it sounded tinny as hell lol, but i notice when i installed it a week ago it doesnt anymore. I like using WMP, because everything i wanted to play, could be played through it ;)
