183876 2003-10-16 08:35:00 Hi.
I'm thinking about buying a dvd player - for my TV (i have one for pc).
I can only afford $300 at moment - and as I have a Panasonic TV i thought my best option was this one: Panasonic

I was wondering, at a later date, would I be able to add surround speakers to this?? If so, how much would the speakers be?

Heres a few details on the DVD player:

183877 2003-10-16 09:03:00 DSE have the Mustek DVD players with 5.1 audio out, well under $200.
Some very cheap ones only have 2 channel (L+R) and not 5.1

Most DVD players have the full compliment of audio outputs, and remember the "speakers" will need to be amplified speakers in most cases, as most DVD players at that end of the $ range do not have an audio amplifier built in. Those that do will come with speakers usually.

So, you need to look at "home theatre sound systems" and not just "speakers".

I run a cheap DVD player into a surround sound capable stereo. Works just fine (300 watts of audio)

183878 2003-10-16 09:09:00 Basically you can add whatever speakers you want to it and the price can range tremendously... You can go cheap as chips and look at an all in one package for around $300 IIRC?

Otherwise you will be looking to spend some money on a separate amplifier... Prob $1,000 just on that before surround speakers... I've done something similar but haven't added the subwoofer yet... So far it's set me back approx $5,000.

I guess the lesson is to let your ears listen to each individual system to determine which one suits your requirements. Mine were that I wanted not only 5.1 sound, but also to have a decent system when it came to music... to be able to turn home-theatre into hi-fi as well I guess??

Best of luck.

183880 2003-10-16 18:59:00 Yes....

"Optical Digital Audio Out for DTS & Dolby Digital Surround Sound, MPEG2 & Linear PCM (96kHz/24-bit)"

What you need is a to use a digital out into a 5.1 amplifier though to power your speakers.
