| 183604 | 2003-10-15 19:58:00 | Morning all Still having occasional problems with excessive internet usage in the office. We have about 40 users with a snapgear hardware firewall running to a Dlink router. I have a spare dunger (P200mmx 64mb) PC with two network cards installed ready to go, and have tried Kerio Winroute but it keeps crashing - don't think it's the low PC specs making it crash (or perhaps it is!). Does anyone know of a more stable software router that can allow me to monitor traffic by Ip address? Then I can nail down just which machine is causing the problem. Snapgear do have a service where you can log in to a website to check usage, but the price is about US$2000 from memory....way too high I feel. Look forward to any suggestions. |

Set up one NIC as the green zone (so all of your users use that as the gateway for their machines), then the other as the red zone (where you connect your current DLink router) and you'll be sweet. From memory these programs have the ability to monitor what's going on with the internet usage and who's connecting to where. I'd reccomend turning on Squid as a transparant proxy for the monitoring of usage, as if it's done right Squid can keep you informed of who went where and who was getting what. Also ensures that you can save some bandwidth for commonly used items such as the main google page and the images and so forth. Might not seem like much but it should add up. CyberChuck |
