183542 2003-10-15 11:48:00 My computer has a Celeron 1.7ghtz CPU & 500 meg Ram
Just out of curiosity I tried to install Windows 95 on it using a 2.2gb hard drive.
W95 installed OK but would not run, "While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You will need to restart your computer."

And thats as far as we can get. I am guessing that it has something to do with the amount of Ram. The 'autoexec.bat' & 'config.sys' are missing as well.
Has anyone any idea what causes this, & is there a work around?
I reckon W95 would really fly on this computer ;-)

183543 2003-10-15 12:04:00 this is a ram error of some sort.......

my memory tells me that it is a knowen issue with some systems and W95

there might be a patch.

183544 2003-10-15 12:34:00 Not necessarily. Probably unlikely a RAM issue.

This is an obscure problem with Windows 95 known to Microsoft.
Search the knowledgebase at MS for more.

Most search engines will turn up a number of responses.

Other known causes are with chip speed errors, overclocking and secondary cache issues.

The problem appears to have no defined solution.

183545 2003-10-15 19:13:00 There is an update for Win95 for running on AMD K6-2-350 or higher CPU's as they would cause the error you are getting.

This was only for AMD CPU's though

183546 2003-10-15 20:02:00 Although the patch was intended for AMD's above 333Mhz it still works on the faster PIII's and Celerons. The trick is to getting into windows to install it. Your best bet is to copy the patch onto a floppy and then try to boot up in safe mode to install it. If the machine won't go into safe mode go into the bios and underclock the processor to 333 or less, this will enable you to get into windows and install the patch - once installed you can put the cpu speed back up. pompeymike (4601)
183547 2003-10-15 21:36:00 It used to be a common problem. Have a look at this site for details:

183548 2003-10-16 21:04:00 I have downloaded the patch, & sometime when I'm not busy I will give it a try.

Thanks. :)
