183531 2003-10-15 05:56:00 I have just installed Red Hat Linux 8 on my PC, install went fine and it was all ready to go, I had some trouble installing my GeForce FX 5200 card but managed to make use of the Generic Vesa driver available (I'm downloading the Linux IA32 driver from nVidia - will that work better)

Anyway my only problem is that I cannot activate the network card (SiS 900 Fast Ethernet adapter) in Linux, I tried the activate button but no luck, I also noticed that it does not have an IRQ assigned to it and I do not know which one to use for the network card.

So my question is how do I activate my network card, without it I cannot access my LAN and that means I can't get to my Router for the Internet.... Help please I want to use Linux!!! :)

PS
Oh one more thing how do I get my Sound Blaster Live! to work in Linux it's telling me "I cannot activate the sound module" and also says it cannot open the "mixer" for my sound card/module.

183532 2003-10-15 06:44:00 I have found Linux pretty good at finding ethernet cards. Have you done a search for your SiS card via Google or something. You may need to download the drivers (via Windows, until you get it going) which may be tar files (are you ok with tar files?) Dolby Digital (160)
183533 2003-10-15 06:48:00 Detecting the card isn't a problem, it is shown in the system, it's not activated " i'm assuming that this means it's not sending or receiving any network information" chiefnz (545)
183534 2003-10-15 20:40:00 For your SB!Live card, you'll likely need to run sndconfig from a terminal.

Open an XTerm, Konsole, or whatever takes your fancy.
type:
su -
<enter password>

now, type the following:
sndconfig

Run through the prompts hitting enter about 4 times and it'll play some sound. The sound is not high-quality, but its not meant to be, its just letting you know your card actually works.

That's your sound-card setup!

Next, keeping that terminal window open, type:
vim /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

Find where it says:
# SiS 900/7016 PCI Fast Ethernet
#/sbin/modprobe sis900
and un-comment the lower line.
(If you dont know how to use vim, move to the start of the line and hit Del).
Save it with:
:wq
(dont forget to type the colon first...!)

Then, run:
/sbin/modprobe sis900
It shouldnt give any other output and just leave you looking with this:
root@AMD1700:~# /sbin/modprobe sis900
root@AMD1700:~#

Now, try typing:
ifconfig eth0 up 192.168.1.2

That should at least get you some ethernet....
If the driver's loaded correctly, you should be able to open up redhat-config-network and use that to change the more finer details of your eth0 setup.

If you want to know if your Card is up, type:
ifconfig
should display something like:
root@AMD1700:~# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:05:1C:13:51:E3

Hope this helps, lemme know how you get on

Cheers
