2003-11-19 03:49:00 | sorry to drag this up, another stab at this idea, upon metla's advice i have disablled AVG and have not had any problems for ages now, among other things he said.... or did. and the only one's i have had are operator non reading instructions completely...(we all have moments like that?) so no majors with the puter, just a query that is bugging me majorly....(no pun intended) :D but am more worried about this electricory thing we have talked about in the past, at moment we have a friends washing machine at our place, swapped washing machines (we have a few extra's) and it had a fault in it, part way through cycle it stops and beeps done it for over an hour now.... waiting for washing repair man to come back (its been to the shop 3 times and he's also seen it here twice.... and it was not being faulty for HWMO or techy man, so along comes Beetle and touches the machine.... and next load it stuffs up again? my friend and i have had constant problems with computers and general electric components, microwaves, photocopiers, fax's, and stoves and now washing machine (our own one did the same thing when i loaded it?) her computer went poof in her face (screen did) a while ago. do you think it is just fate or may we be electrically inclined or something? do we need earthing? i always give people static shocks (my kids cringe in summer....) or is it clothing we wear? any ideas on this silly bit of topic greatly appreciated. beetle

2003-11-19 09:39:00 | I call for motion that Beetle keeps all her problems contained inside this thread. That way we can keep a running commentary and the sane can avoid it so as not to become insane. Reccommend you get an Apple beetle, far easier to operate and they run linux so are much more stable than windows. | aroc (3256) | |
2003-11-19 11:23:00 | Beet, is it an F&P gentle annie type machine? If it is, they can build up static from the main drive belt which somehow shorts the controller board. Turn it off at the wall, take the plug out and put your hand across the plugs pins..... on second thought get your nearest and dearest to place his hand across the pins. Plug it back in and see if it works. If its not an F&P forget everything I just suggested. Tip courtesy of a friendly repair man who must have taken pity on us has he counted out his callout fee with us looking on. Cheers Murray P PS. Beet, don't touch your car while its being filled at the petrol station, OK.

2003-11-19 19:41:00 | Static electricity can be a major problem for some people and they can cause damage to electronic components as a result. You could try wearing leather soled shoes instead of rubber which might help.

Attach the other end to a suitably earthed appliance. Such as the stove. Leave the chain just long enough to reach the fridge and the dining table, and many problems will be solved? ]:) |

2003-11-19 23:44:00 | :_| and here i thought all you people were my friends, but now you just plain picking on me... the washing machine now has a new brain 6th attempt by repair man to find an actual fault (i was not here, to help set it off) . and as i am mostly stuck at motel i am not going to be needing any chain thank you.... and then i must wear shoes???? what is this world coming to? this is not a good warm vibe thread any more today, and have school still this arfvo so may even drop the mood even further than it is already..... cant keep anything cereal with you guys around....:p :D catch you later. beetle

2003-11-20 01:45:00 | Rest easy dear beetle :| While you may shock your children, it is highly unlikely that you would be able to damage any electrical or electronic product without opening it up and discharging static directly into the circuitry. Similarly, a plugged in washing machine is a well grounded as it can get so "touching plugs on hands" is just another bit of folk-lorish nonsense. With many appliances you will feel a shock if you do that, but it comes from the machine to you and not vice-versa. The shock actually comes from capacitors on the mains input filtering that are left charged up if you pull the plug while the mains cycle is at its peak. If you are prone to static buildup, things that can make it worse are dry skin, clothing types, shoe sole material, carpet material, and dryness of the air. The cause is a phenomenon known as the Triboelectric effect Tribo simply means "rubbing" and it is the rubbing together of dissimilar materials (including human skin) that generates the static electricity. The further apart the materials are on the triboelectric scale, the greater the voltage generated. Effects such as those you are experiencing are usually caused by the rubbing of clothing on your body or by the rubbing contact of your footwear on the floor surface as you walk. Wheeling of trolleys or the dragging of bags across the floor can also generate static effects. Static electricity is a natural and normal phenomenon and most people have experienced a static discharge at some time, usually when getting out of a motor vehicle or on touching a doorknob after walking across a carpeted floor. The level of static generated is typically 5-10 thousand volts but since the energy level is very low, although uncomfortable the effect is harmless. I have measured up to 80,000 volts on workers in a cool and humidity-controlled archiving environment. The level of static electricity generated depends on three main factors: (i) The temperature and humidity of the air. (ii) The separation of the rubbing materials on the triboelectric scale. (iii) The rate of differential movement between the rubbing materials. On a personal level, individual susceptibility is determined by the skin characteristics of the individual i.e. moist or normally dry, the types of material favoured for clothing and the composition of their footwear. It is the effect of individual susceptibility that, all other factors being equal, makes static shocks more prevalent for one individual than another. Triboelectric Series (simplified example) + (positive) Glass Human hair Nylon Wool Fur Aluminium Polyester Paper Cotton (centre point) Steel Copper Nickel Rubber Acrylic Polyurethane Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Teflon - (negative) The greater the distance between items on this scale, the greater the potential charge. I hope this isn't information overload beetle, but you needed to know that you are not the direct and involuntary cause of electrical problems around your home and business. We will draw a veil over your voluntary activities where you already know that you might be responsible for some computer glitches. Cheers Billy 8-{) :)

2003-11-20 03:14:00 | ????? so how do you explain the washing machine not defaulting and running just fine, till either my friend or i are standing in the vicinity? my husband actually made me go and touch the stupid thing, so that it would fail? after how many loads of washing fault free? and on that same cycle it had same fault show up? Fate? i guess i understand the explaination you gave BT but that does not mean i beleive it???? i feel it is just murphys law and beetle mania.... LOL so that means i also need a new wardrobe? leather shoes and cotton clothes???? hubby thanxs you most kindly for that idea.....NOT! LOL i have not ever seen any teflon clothes so we will flag that idea.... ok ill learn to live with it, and the constant ribbing about my electric personality... and try not to get to close to any electronic machines.... :D thanxs all for putting up with my drivel.. beetle
