184111 2003-10-17 03:39:00 Hi.
I've just set up a network between two PC's both running XP Pro.
The network works fine - but the Internet sharing doesn't.

First, a few things - I've just upgraded one of the PC's - it used to have 98SE on it. Both the PC's have acces to the interent (56k dial up) by themselves - eg, PC 1 can be on net - while PC 2 is not, and PC 2 can be on net - while PC 1 is not.

The upgraded PC still has access to the internet - along with PC 1 (my pc i'm on now) my PC is the host computer, so i wanted it that whenever i'm on the net, the cleint PC (PC 2) has acces thro mine, and when i'm not on the net - PC 2 can connect directly by its self.

Only thing - for net sharing to work on XP - i have to disable PC 2's interent connection - this is good till i wanna switch my pc off etc - then we have to reinstall the inetrect connection.

Is there a way around this? Can I have both PC's with inetrent access by them selves - and also ICS going thro my pc to the cleint??

I hope I haven't confused you (it sounds confusing) if i have, i'll try making it clearer.

Thanks

184112 2003-10-17 03:44:00 It might be a simple matter of right clicking on the dialup connection on PC 2, and selecting disable, while you want to use ICS via PC 1. Or the other way around, that is, disable the LAN connection while you want to use dialup on PC 2. agent (30)
184113 2003-10-17 05:16:00 The easier way then disabling connections is just to set up the Lan connection for the internet connection through the network, then go into Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Connections [tab] and select dial connection when Network Connection doesn't exist or whatever it is (should be the middle option).

What this does is it searches for the network connection and if it's there then it gets internet through that, if it's not then it dials out! Simplicity :D.

184114 2003-10-17 10:00:00 All you do, is click on the dialup icon on PC1(the main one)/properties/advanced. Tick the 1st option under
Internet sharing. That'll automatically give it the ip of 192.168.0.1.

On PC2, click on the LAN icon/properties/TCP/IP, and select
USE the following ip. Type 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and type 192.168.0.1 to the right of default gateway.

And also, where it says preferred DNS server, type 192.168.01
here as well. then OK. That's it. PC2 should get on the net!

And NO you cant have both on the net at the same time without
ICS. Unless (1) you have 2 phonelines. or (2) PC2 has a modem
in it, and it's connected directly to the phonejack, with an adaptor.

And (1) Your ISP will most probably kill/disconnect you, if it
detects the same login name twice, when you try and connect
anyway! Even if you had 2 phonelines. What do you mean you
have to reinstall the internet connection? on which PC? PC1 or PC2?

You shouldn't have to reinstall the internet connection. On PC1, if
the dialup connection is still in View Network Connections, make
a shortcut on the desktop. That way you can click on the icon
on the desktop and dial your ISP!
