| 184294 | 2003-10-17 22:31:00 | Do you have a network card in your PC? I have seen some PC's with them in but not actually plugged into a network that will not shut down until you plug in a network. If you are running Win98SE the are a couple of patches from Microsoft that should fix the shutdown problem. Have a look here (support.microsoft.com) |

Then add programs back one by one until the problem occurs, that will pinpoint the culprit if it is a dodgy program. |

| 184297 | 2003-10-18 19:38:00 | Have a look at this previous post I wrote: Re: 98se close down Posted: Aug 26, 2003 1:27 PM Reply Posted by: brig do you have a network card installed ? If you do, check to see if it has a Realtek 8029 chip. I suffered hung shutdowns for 2 years after I installed D-Link DE-528 ethernet cards in 2 networked PCs running W98SE. Neither would shutdown unless the other was still on! I found only 1 reference to this obscure problem after 2 years of searching the net, and it was from an IT student in the States. D-link were no help at all, just gave me the standard list of "try this and see" solutions. It turns out that this particular chip was set to "TP/CX Auto Detect" and would continuously hunt for another connection if there was none curerent. If this happens to be your problem get back to me and I'll give you the fix. brig |
